Notes
a. Note:   Orchard Street Carnegie Pennsylvania nicknamed Whitey because of his very light blond hair.
was a photography buff and experimented with taking photos in natural light.
was a very good draftsman - worked in Detroit in the automobile factories as an engine tool designer and also in Williamsport PA in the Lycoming (sp?) airplane factory that built the Piper Cub aircraft. family moved between the 3 cities (Detroit, Williamsport, and Carnegie) wherever Frances worked.
1930 United States Federal Census lists the family as living at 11700 Corbett Avenue in Detroit, ( Wayne County) , Michigan- Frances as 31 years old, wife Katherine {sic} - age 27, and Children; Genevieve (age 6) and Ralph (age 1 2/12). They rented the house for $55 a month.
From Toni Brem ( February 2007) "A few starters: I am the oldest of Francis Edmund Brem and Anna Elizabeth Seminitis. I was born March 12, 1942 in Johnstown, PA. My legal name is Antonina (supposively named my grandmother (Francis Edmund's Mother) Martha (after my mother's youngest and favorite sister. I graduated from the University of Michigan in 1968 with a PHD in Clinical Epidemiology/Infectionous Diseases. I am an excellent clinical microbiologist & college professor. I was married to Eugene, and divorced in 1975/6. I have no children (medically could not carry a pregnancy to term). My sister Ann Frances (named after my Mother and Father) was born Jan 26, 1945 in Cumberland MD. She is a Registered Nurse with many specialities. She married William Winthrop Gwinnell. They had three children:William Scott ( an Masters' Degreed Musician/composer), Amy Elizabeth: college student now, and Andrew Russell-Francis. William died of colon cancer in 1984 - Ann never remarried. William Edmund was born in November 1946. He is an Emergency Medical Specialist (currently Chief of the City of Detroit EMT). He married Nancy Ryan. They had three children. Eric Gordon died in 2006 at age 24 following complications of an automobile collision. Kevin is presently a college student. Madeline Ann is a senior in HS and planning to attend university in the fall. Thomas Benjamin was born in January 19, 1949. He has a Masters' Degree in Marketing/Business and accomplished in that field. He was married to Paula and now divorced. There were no children. Harold Leroy was born on June 23, 1952. He is a Corporation Financial Planner (Presently at Schwab). He is married to Laura Mary Tkach. She is a pre-school teacher. They have 2 children. Eric John is an engineering student at Arizona State University. Lisa Ann is a HS sophmore with stright A's: university is in her plans. Some things about Francis Edmund:We lived in Johnstown, PA, Cumberland MD (one year only), and Altoona PA (2301 4th Ave). He was a salesman for several commerical advertising companies and traveled to service his accounts. In 1952 we moved to Detroit MI so he could work as a draftsman for Hudson Motor Company. Yes, they say he was very, very good! We lived at 1512 Dickerson, 3140 Lenox (and this is where he died April 06, 1963) of congestive heart failure complications. He died on a Saturday morning after working a full day the Friday before! A myocardial infraction did him in - totally unexpected as the heart condition was being medically managed - best they could do in those days. He died in his auto outside the A&P after purchasing some sandwhich ingredients ( I sure do not know why he was doing that - Mother did the shopping in our house)." From Toni Brem (Jan 2009) "he and Kathrine had a son (Either Francis Edmund or Edmund Francis) older than Geneive who died in a diphtheria epidemic. Apparently died in Detroits' Herman Kiefer or Harper Hospital: my father talked alot about that and even blamed it for his and Kathrines' divorce. "
(5/11/2011) From Ralph Brem: Fracis lost his job as a draftsman and became a salesman. The family moved a lot. Ralph remembers attending three different schools in just one year. They lived in Blairsville PA (Indiana County) with thier grandmother Anna. The family had to leave in the dark of night to escape the landlord and the sherrif. The family rode in the car (all four kids in the back - Richard was quite little) and friends followed in a truck with all of thier belongings. Richard's blanket was used to cover the load on the truck. The family was pulled over by the sherrif jut near the county line between Allegheny and Indiana counties. Francis spun a tale of showing the children the full harvest moon (October then it was) as they could not see it where they lived in the city. Just then the truck of fruniture passed them and Richard saw his blanket and began crying "My blanket! My blanket!" Franicis gunned the engine and raced over the county line and free of the sherrif.
That was also the night that Francis left the family. Ralph remembers that his father came into the room where they were sleeping, did not speak, and left. Ralph knew it was him by the scent of his cigarettes.
Ralph received a letter from his father years later while in the service, but did not answer it. He wishes he had though to hear the other side of the story as to why he left the family.
From Joanne Brem Okrutny ( Feb. 2009) "Whitey" bragged a lot about himself. After his death, his body was shipped by train back to Carnegie, PA from Michigan and his brothers Stanley and Nick paid for the funeral. The service was held at the funeral home by Fr. Siemiatkowski and the was buried in the local public cemetery because he did not belong to the church - and therefore could not be buried in the family plot. A lunchoen was held by Hettie (wife of Stanley) in thier home afterwards.
On tombstone: PFC HQ CO 8 FLD ARTY 7 DIV World War I
