Notes
a. Note:   Obituary: "Jean Phillips Nance, 86, of Slingerlands, died December 13, 2006 at the Community Hospice Inn of Albany. Born July 20, 1920 in Canandaigua, N.Y., the daughter of Ross and Mary Kellogg Phillips. She was raised in Rochester and educated in the Rochester Public Schools and at the University of Rochester, (BA in 1942 and Ph.D. in botany in 1946). She taught at the University of Wisconsin, Madison where she met and married another junior faculty member, James F. Nance. Because of nepotism policies at that time, she was unable to continue her professional career after her husband's appointment as professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Cham-paign. She worked in a school science curriculum project for several years and was frequently a substitute teacher in the Urbana and Champaign High Schools. She lived in the Urbana, Ill. area until her husband's death in 2003, when she moved to the Beverwyck Retirement Community in Slingerlands. An enthusiastic naturalist, Jean spent many summers in the family cabin in Colo. where she enjoyed identifying and photographing wild flowers. She was also an avid gardener of flowers and vegetables. After her husband's retirement, the couple was active in restoration of tall-grass prairies in east central Ill. They also served a year in VISTA, working with a nutrition program in Yakima, Wash. Jean became interested in computers in the 1980s and was a longtime officer of an International Commodore users' group, Meeting 64/128 Users Through the Mail. At Beverwyck, she enjoyed many activities, including drawing in pastels, maintaining a flower garden, listening to books on tape and caring for her parakeets. She made many dear friends. She leaves four children, Paul Nance and wife Glenna Spitze of Albany, Julia Allen and husband Brian Allen of Hampton, Va., David Nance and wife Betsy Lawrence of Madison, Wis. and Laura Cama and husband Joseph Cama of Towanda, Pa. and nine grandchildren."
