Note: "Enlisted in the Union Army in 1860, in Company C, 3rd NY Volunteers. Reenlisted in Company K, 185th NY Volunteers. According to his daughter, Grace Phillips Bryant, in an account when she was about 90, "He was in battle of Gettysburg, captured the second day and was in Libby prison for 7 months." Since the battle of Gettysburg was almost two years before the end of the war, there must be some error here. His son, Ross Phillips knew that he had been in Libby prison, and got out at the end of the war in a semi-starved condition. In fact, he was said to have gone to a Washington, DC restaurant with a friend from prison, and they ordered a large meal. Neither of them could eat more than a few bites, and they broke into tears. He was mustered out as a 2nd Lt. at the end of the war. "He was a construction foreman and moved around between PA, NY, Mich., Alab., and Missouri between 1868 and 1885, a total of ten moves. After that he lived in Syracuse, NY, where he was supervisor and watchman for Solvay Process Co. (now Allied Chemical). He was a great gardener, grew prize dahlias and his daughter Grace remembered his gardens. He also raised white Leghorn chickens." His home was in Syracuse, NY, but he was visiting his son Ross and family in Niagara Falls, NY at the time of his death." Obit 1: "Dies at Niagara Falls. C. A. A photo of him in his uniform (I've only ever seen the one pose) says "Syracuse, NY, Civil War - age 17. Enlisted in Syracuse, NY 185th NY Volunteers Cpt.
