Notes
a. Note:   "He was a farmer living near Birdsall, NY for much of his life. The 1850 census lists value of his real estate as $464. One census (year not specified) states he has 70 acres valued at $1000. That year on that farm he produced 150 bu. potatoes, 12 bu. flax seed, 180 lbs. butter, and had 12 sheep. The 1865 NY census lists him as a widower age 68 born in Washington Co., and a boarder at the home of William & Elizabeth Hinney. No children appear with him in this 1865 census." - Stockwell Family p.619
"David was born in Whitehall, NY but spent most of his childhood in Cayuga Co., NY. He was a farmer in Allegany Co. most of his life." - handwritten note, probably by Don Phillips, in The Stockwell Family.
I found a house on the 1869 Allegany Co. Atlas for Birdsall labeled A. Helm. David's son-in-law was Alfred Helm and it seems logical this might have been the Stockwell homestead. I saw no other Stockwells or son-in-laws on the map. It was in lot #21, now about 2900 Hiltonville Rd. Drove by 7/29/2011 and there is no old house visible. - Tina
I have a copy of an Allegany Co. deed (lib M p.405) dated 9/6/1833 in which Ezra Botsford sells land in town 6, range 2, (L # 31 per Moses Van Camper survey), to David Stockwell of Portage, Allegany (now Livingston Co).
I have a copy of an Allegany Co. deed (lib M p.267) dated 9/28/1835 in which Lorin Gleason sells land in town 4, range 1, Morris Reserve, to David Stockwell of Almond, Allegany.
I have a copy of an Allegany Co. deed (lib 16 p.356) dated 6/13/1843 in which David Stockwell of Portage, Allegany (now Livingston Co) sells land in (Cottninger or some such, hard to read) to William Johnson.
I have more Allegany Co. deeds for David Stockwell.
