Apr. 1841/49 Canton Conn" - The Stockwell Family "In the 1790 census, David is listed in Whitehall, Washington Co., NY. He, his brother Eleazor, and his brother Andrew were among the first settlers in Ira Center, Cato Twp., Cayuga Co., NY; claiming lot #58 in 1800; later Ira Twp. was formed from part of Cato Twp. These places are not far from Syracuse. When David arrived and established the first inn there in 1800, it was still called Cato Twp... Polly was the first child born there, in April 1802. "David seems to have moved frequently thereafter. He was still in Ira at the time of the 1810 census, but by 1816 he and Lucy were living at Sterling, NY (near Oswego) according to mortgage records filed there. David and Lucy were admitted on 10 June 1827 to the church at Canton, Conn., from a church in Oswego, NY (Canton Center Church Records vol. 1 p. 235). They were dismissed from the Canton Center Church to one in Collinsville, CT/MA on 22 Oct 1837 (ibid)." - The Stockwell Family Gazeteer of the State of NY 1860 p. 202 re Ira: "David Stockwell kept the first inn in 1800." "The first settlements were made by David, Eleazur, and Andrew Stockwell, 3 brothers from Whitehall, on lot 58..." "The first settlements [in Ira, Cayuga Co., NY] were made in 1800, in which year David and Eleazer Stockwell, brothers, came in from Whitehall and located on lot 58, about a mile north of the south line, David, on the farm owned by Dewitt C. Pulsipher, and Eleazer, on the farm on which his son Augustus now lives. Both died on the farms then taken up. They were brothers of Andrew Stockwell, who settled the same year in Cato. David Stockwell kept the first inn in 1800; and his daughter Polly, who was born in April, 1802, was the first child born in the town. Eleazer Stockwell and Margaret Noble, contracted the first marriage March 7th, 1802." - History of Cayuga Co., p. 273 (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nycayuga/storke/page273.html)
