In Memoriam, Edward (sic) Van Nest Brokaw
(Penciled in is March 24, 1932)
Brief notice was given last week of the passing of Isaac Van Nest Brokaw. The funeral took
place on Easter Sunday afternoon, from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elmer Burnham, with whom he
and Mrs. Brokaw had been living since October 1930.
Mr. Brokaw was born on April 20, 1859, at the old Brokaw homestead, two miles south of Ovid. He
was one of four children, of whom Mrs. Don Travis, a sister, survives.
On Thanksgiving Day 1880 he was united in marriage to Miss Cora Scott, of Scott's Corners. There
was one child by this marriage, Sara, now Mrs. Elmer Burnham.
Mrs. Brokaw died on March 26, 1911.
On March 12, 1913, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Smith, who now survives him. There is one
 grandchild, Clara Elizabeth Burnham.
Mr. Brokaw lived for 31 years on the farm two miles east of Ovid on the Interlaken Road, and for
many years was a regular attendant at the Ovid Center Baptist Church, serving for a time in the capacity
of trustee. He was a member of the Ovid Grange and served one term as road commissioner for the town of Ovid.
For some time Mr. Brokaw had been in failing health, and since May 1930 had been practically blind.
His final sickness lasted a little more than one week.
At the funeral, relatives were present from Kingston and Batavia, NY.
The service was conducted by Rev. George C. Jeffers, retired pastor of the Ovid Center Baptist
Church, assisted by Rev. Stanley C. Page, pastor of Ovid Presbyterian Church.
There were many beautiful floral tributes, and the many friends present marked the high esteem in
which Mr. Brokaw was held. Interment was in Ovid cemetery.
"Until the dawn breaks, and the shadows flee away."
