a. Note:   Oswald Cole moved from Tallapoosa County, Al to Coffee County, Al in the late 1880's or early 1890's with his parents, William Cole and Barbara Ann Mays Smith.
"In the death of O. C. (Bunch) Smith, I feel that I have lost one of the dearest, truest friends I ever had.. I first became acquainted with him soon after I came to Elba in 1929.
At that time, Mr. Smith was a successful farmer and gardener, living in the Liberty Methodist Church community northwest of Elba. He was called the "watermelon king" of west Coffee County, and the people of this section learned to look forward each year to the time the Smith melons made their appearance.
He was a devout Christian in profession and practice and was one of the best versed Bible students in this area. For several years he was a dealer in Bibles and other religious literature and was responsible for countless religious items being placed in the hands of readers.
Mr. Smith was very active in Sunday School and church promotion and was instrumental in founding numerous Sunday Schools. I had the privilege of being associated with him in various lines of religious endeavor and spent many enjoyable hours and traveled many miles with him. His fine Christian life has been a real inspiration to me. Many times I have benefited by calling upon him and discussing religious as well as other matters.
Mr. Smith had been a rugged, hard working man for many years, but had been in declining health for several months. His devotion to his wife who has been a helpless invalid for several years had been an inspiration to those who are acquainted with the situation.
If I am any judge of heavenly awards, I would say that "Bunch" Smith's heavenly crown will be a well-studded one."
---Tribute by Mr. C. B. McDowell, published in the "Elba Clipper", October 1956.
