Notes
a. Note:   Northford was laid out for settlement before 1700, but was not granted Church independence until much later 13 Jun 1750.
The Northford Congregational Church held a Centennial Celebration 8 Oct 1876. The reports at the time showed eighteen men listed when the church was first constituted. Among these were Joseph Linsley, Daniel Maltby, Timothy Rose, Capt. Aaron Cook, and Peter Tyler.
In later years Ralph Linsley, grandson of Joseph was a deacon there, and Munson Linsley also. Munson was grandson of John 4th, Joseph's brother.
Joseph held a Lieutenant's Commission in the British army from the King. This was in the family for many years. At one time Soloman Linsley 2nd had it and in 1926 Lillian (Linsley) McConnell said she saw it at the home of Mrs. J.J. Linsley in Northford, CT.
Joseph was the first Linsley to settle in this new part of Branford, which in 1831 was incorporated as "North Branford" town and had two settlements, the one at Northford, and one at North Branford, several miles apart.
On 27 May 1731 Joseph married Lydia Wilford at Branford. She died on 16 Jun 1780, age 67, after a fall from a chair carriage. Joseph died on 1 Jan 1786, age 77, and their tombstones are in the Northford Cemetery.
Lydia Wilford was born in 1713 the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Pollard) Wilford. He was born at Walton in Surry England on 18 Jul 1654, the son of Richard who was born in 1619; he married Ann Griffith in 1653, and died on 2 Aug 1676. Lydia was the oldest of 5 daughters, probably born in Branford, CT.
Elizabeth Pollard was born the daughter of Thomas Pollard of Maidstone, Kent, England.
Richard, son of Richard, came to New Haven colony in 1700 and brought his family very soon thereafter. When he left England he left a wife and Richard 3rd, but it is thought his 5 daughters were all born here. Family traditions say he was educated at the College of the Nobles in Lisbon.
He was a member of the Governor's Council at New Haven.
