Notes
a. Note:   As written in the above records this name seems to be "COLE". We find no records of Dennis or Mary in Stonington Church but "John Cally" was baptized 18 Feb 1693, and "Sarah Cally" on 10 Dec 1696.
Then in the Branford Records (Vol. 4, Page 531) "8 July 1695 John Linsley Senr. of Branford conveyed to "my two daughters Mary Cone and Hannah Barnes" one parcel of land about 63 acres in Branford in a place called Bare-plain". This deed was not entered for record till 17 Jan 1723. Mary evidently had married again, this deed is dated 1695 - - 12 years after Dennis' death.
On 5 Jun 1700 (Vol. 2, Page 147) "John Caley" of Stonington, Conn. for 12L, conveys to John Barnes of Branford land at bare plain - - - by estimation one and thirty acres and a halfe, and is the one halfe of land called farmland that did formly belong to my grandfather John Linsley late of Branford deceased, Witnesses: Eleazer Stent, John Howd, Acknowledged (in Branford) before Wm. Maltby, Justice".
This land deed, evidently, is by the son of Mary and conveys to the son of her sister Hannah, Mary's share of the land received by Mary and Hannah jointly in the deed above, from John Linsley, their father.
The name "John Caley" written quite clear and brings up the question: Was Mary's first husband Cole, Cale, Caley, or possibly Kelley?
There are a number of land records and various spellings of the name, but it appears to be definitely settle by the Probate records.
In New London County (Early Probate) Court Records (Vol. 4,5,6 Page 64) we find "June 22 1683-4 the inventory of Dennis Kelly deceased exhibited, ye reliet or widow made oath". "Admin. granted to the widow & free use & disposal of, to bring up six children left by her husband". Court appoints - Isack Wheeler and Thomas Hewet to bee helpful to the widow".
The early records called "Cole" were probably "Cale", an attempt to spell "Kelley", which later was "Cale, Calle, Cally and finally Kally, then Kelly.
In these same records, the schoolmaster's name, which was "Cole" is spelled "Coal"
Then (Vol. 3, Page 169 Branford) "13th of Mar. 1713 Mary Cone of Westerly, Road Island widow - - - - - for 10L conveys to Jonathan Linsley of Branford - - - - - - - right in the 4th Division - - - - that came by or through my father Right" Witnesses: George Stillman, Deaborah Stillman, Acknowledged before John Sanders, Justice. Here she is in Road Island and conveying land to her nephew, son of her brother, John Linsley Jr.
This last deed, adds to the questions. It is given in the name of Mary Cone (widow) and dated 1713.
This would seem to indicate her second husband was dead. It seems unlikely that there is any error in this deed of 1713, or the one from her father dated 1695 and both mention her name as "Cone".
However, in Vol. 2, Page 198 we find the following deed: "John Cely of Stonington for 50L fifty acres to John Wells of same place excepting - - - - - - - of the dwelling hous & half the (frught) of the too orchards next the said hous I reserve to the use of my mother Mary Cely during her natural life.
signed Mary X Cely John Celly Wit Hannah Palmer
Daniel Palmer dated 16 Feb 1701-2 Wit Joseph Palmer
Debarah Elliot Mary X Cely" If her name was "Cone" in 1695, why is the above deed 1701 signed "Cely". It appears as an error, also, there do not seem to be any Cones of record in Westerly or Stonington, that could of been her husband, but in 1713 she herself gives a deed to Jonathan Linsley as shown above and gives her name as "Cone", so it appears she had married a Cone.
This deed of 1713 seems to be almost the last record of Mary and her family. They must of left there soon after she gave it and no further record has been found.
