 Age 44 in 1851 census. In 1851 only Charlotte and Margaret Mary are listed with them. In the Commercial Directory ofLeicestershire, by E.S.Drake & Co., 1861, John Nichols is listedas "Victualler, Cricket Inn, Netherseal, but does not appear tobe in the Netherseal census for 1861.
 Found Mary living with grandaughter Eva, age 5, in Atherstone,in the 1861 census - listed as "Wife of Ag Labourer" - but John is nowhere to be found!
 Found John in the 1871 census, a widower, living with grandaughter Eva, age 15, in Newton Regis, Warwickshire.
 Found a John Nicholls, age 80, born in Litchfield, Staff., in the 1881 census, a pauper, widowed, in the Birmingham, Warwick workhouse. Could be him?
 Found two death possibilities at FreeBMD - one in 1883, one in 1884.
