Note: N14 Mary Marcelino, nee Kozlik, was born on September 2, 1839 in Czechoslovakia, where she spent a part of her early age. She also spent some time in Prague and Doubi, where she learned to speak the German language so well that she could speak German as well as Czech. In 1870, she came to Chicago where her sister had already been living for a few years. On August 10, 1872, she married Caetano Marcelino and they lived together for 54 years and 6 days. As newlyweds, they lived in Chicago for two years, where her first daughter Marie was born. In 1874, they came to Nebraska to live 25 years on a farm southwest of Crete, They had to get through the difficult time of learning to farm, but they survived mainly by her own determination and that of her husband. They were able to manage the difficult times through hard work and personal sacrifice. They lived on the farm for 31 years where another four children were born. In 1905, they retired to a home in Crete until Mary's death on August 16, 1926. Mary Marcelino was an unselfish wife, and a gentle and loving mother. She was a progressive woman, a lettered and sincere Czech, who taught her children their mother language and good Czech personal qualities, so that they were a joy for both her and her husband. Her husband also learned much about the language from her. She is survived by her husband Caitano Marcelino; five children-Frank J. and Joe J. Marcelino, Mrs. Anton Horky, Mrs. Charles W. Aron, and Mrs. C. M. Tobiska; 19 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Anna Marcelino still living in California. Mary Marcelino was a member of J.C.D. in Crete and a dedicated worker in this association. Her beautiful life certainly could be an example for others. She reached a fine age-she was 87 years, 2 weeks, and 3 days old at the day of her death. The number of people at her funeral (provided by Kuncl & Vaverka) is evidence for her popularity in this community. A tribute to her memory!
