Notes
a. Note:   N184 Czechs are lovers not only of music, singing and dancing, but also of drama and in any settlement of any size they give amateur theatricals frequently. The first performance of this kind in Saline County and probably in the state (with the exception of Omaha) was given by the Reading Society, on the farm of John M. Svoboda, member of J.C.D. Lodge Kvetoslava No. 64, Z.C.B.J. Lodge Karolina Svetiz No. 96, and the Star Club. His home was located about two miles from Crete. The log house 16x22 served for the opera house, lighted by only two windows. The play given was "Rekrutyrka v Kocourkove" (Recruiting Soldiers In Kocourkov), with Joseph Jindra as stage manager and the following actors and actresses: John M. Svoboda, Frank Nedela, Vitus Jelinek, Frank Znamenacek, Vaclav Aksamit, Anton Herman, Mrs. Elizabeth Aron and Miss Mary Nedela (later Mrs. Kubicek). Eight-year-old Barbara Nedela (now Mrs. Frank Papik) took the part of a boy. Boards laid across two strong saw bucks served for a stage and a white calico curtain for the drop. Everybody came whose feet could carry him and everybody was satisfied with the performance, at the close of which the "stage" was carried out and a dance held. This took place in 1869.
  Obituary
Mrs. Barbara Papik, one of the pioneers of Saline County, died Friday morning at her home in Crete, her death coming unexpectedly and as a shock to the entire community. Mrs. Papik suffered a paralytic stroke about three months ago, but had recovered her usual good health and on the day before her death entertrained the Star Club of which she had long been a respected member.
Mrs. Barbara Nedela Papik was born June 8, 1860 in the city of Mseno, County of Melnik, Bohemia. She was the youngest child of John and Barbara Nedela. As a child of six, she emigrated with her parents to America, settling first in Chicago, Illinois. After two years they moved to Nebraska, where her parents settled 3 1/2 miles southwest of Crete. At that time, there were no near neighbors. Lincoln was a small village and Nebraska City was the nearest trading point. On this homestead, she grew to womanhood.
October 22, 1878, she was united in marriage with Mr. Frank J. Papik, and together they shared the hardships and privations of those early days. In the fall of 1909, Mr. and Mrs. Papik moved to Crete, where they built a beautiful home and where they lived until Mr. Papik's death in July 1924.
After the death of her husband, she sold the home and purchased the residence where she died. Mrs. Papik was a member of J.C.D. Lodge Kvetoslava No. 64, the Z. C. B. J. Lodge Karolina Svella No. 46, and the Star Club. Those left surviving her and who mourn her untimely death are Mrs. Mary Musil, Mrs. Emma Jazicek, Mrs. Anna Matejka, Mrs. Ida Nohaec, and the sons Charles, Joseph, and Ladimore Papik. Also 23 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and a multitude of friends and acquaintances.
Funeral services were held at the Sokol Hall Sunday afternoon, December 18, where a large gathering of friends and relatives gathered. The services were conducted by F. J. Sadilek, a life-long friend of the family, also by members of the orders to which she belonged. Interment was at the Maple Grove cemetery near Crete.
