Note: N1 1940 census: Pasadena, Los Angeles County, California, 556 North Michigan Avenue His father was Jacob van der Werf de Jonger (Junior). The abbreviation for "jonger" was "Jr" at the end of the name, which he sometimes added. This "Jr" was misread by an immigration official, and as a result, a second letter "f" was added to the surname, but this was incorrect. Throughout his life, Jacob Boreas van der Werf was "Jacob Boreas Van Der Werff. In youth he was called "Jay," in adulthood "Van." His neighbors across the street at 507 North Michigan Avenue, Pasadena, invited him to spend the summer at their cabin at Silver Lake (near June Lake), California, in 1931. Their names were Lambert P and Eulalie V Bagnard, and their three sons, Robert, Richard, and Donald. At this time, he became an avid fly-fisherman, an activity he pursued throughout his life. He held several patents for various items on the DC-3 airplane.
