a. Note:   N12316 The actual parents of Elizabeth and Jane are not known. It is believed that they are sisters because the will of Henry Hartwell, Jane’s last husband, names as nephews and nieces of his wife the children of Elizabeth and Nicholas Meriwether and the child of Elizabeth and William Browne. The Browne child would not have been a niece of Jane if Jane was a Meriwether as originally reported by Brodie and widely published as fact thereafter.
  One researcher has suggested they were the daughter of a Mr. Underwood.
