Notes
a. Note:   Her mother died when she was 2 years old. She was raised by her father and her step-mother Daisy, along with a half-brother, John, but she spent a good part of her youth in the care of an aunt, Edith (Lefever). Her life in England is not well known; she rarely spoke of it. She was not fond of her step-mother and was more at home with her two aunts, Edith and Ethel and with Ethel's children, Doris (Dodo), David and Gordon, all of whom lived in and around Brighton. She remained in Brighton after her husband was killed and gave birth to their son some 7 months later. In 1946, the Canadian government offered to bring British war brides and children to Canada as they began to wind down the military footprint in England. The offer extended to war widows as well. She took advantage of the chance for a new beginning. She arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 11 Sep 1946 and departed soon after by train to Port Arthur and Fort William to live among her husband's family. She lived a lonely life, remaining a widow until her only remaining son, Edward, became independent in order to preserve the security of a meagre war pension. From about 1952 to retirement in 1982 she worked as a cashier for the city of Port Arthur, which evolved to become the City of Thunder Bay.
She returned to England occasionally: in 1954, 1966 and 1974, but only for a few weeks at a time.
