Notes
a. Note:   Known to family as Annie. Was 8 months pregnant with Anita in summer 1911 in Cochrane when large forest fire destroyed much of the town. Azarie was away in a lumber camp at the time. She dressed her children and hurried them down to the lake where they were covered in wet blankets and waited for safety. Nothing remained of their home except the safe. Family was evacuated immediately afterwards to relatives in Bonfield, where Anita was born.
b. Note:   BI2809
Note:   The record of baptism clearly states that the birth date was 1 November; however, Annie always celebrated her birthday on 30 November. It is most likely that the priest (or the parents) recorded the wrong date at the baptism. Such errors were not uncommon, especially when the baptism was some time after the birth.

Note:   Although they married in Sturgeon Falls, Azarie and Annie met on Allumette Island, where they were neighbours many years earlier. He often recounted stories of "bouncing her on his knee" when he was a young lad (she would have been a baby at the time). They married after a whirlwind three-week romance in Sturgeon Falls where Annie was working. Most of the children were born in Chapleau and considered that their home through much of their youth. The older girls went to high school in North Bay and were anxious to leave Chapleau due to a lack of opportunities. The family moved to Fort William about 1930 and turned their sawmill operations over to a partner. They lost the mill shortly after in the Depression and remained in Thunder Bay area for the rest of their lives, as did many of their children and grandchildren.
