Notes
a. Note:   A check of QLD immigration records revealed the following:
FERGUSON, Annie E. age 22 and John age 17 were listed as single remittance passengers on the "Duke of Sutherland" a ship of 2031 tons under Captain Cox. The Surgeon Superintend and Matron were Dr Marshall and Miss Wale respectively. (Note: According to Gladys Ferguson Annie's brother John later returned to Ireland.
The passage had one birth and no deaths on the trip from London (5 Nov 1887) to Brisbane. They made first landfall at Thursday Island in the Torres Straits followed by Cooktown, Townsville,
Rockhampton, and Maryborough before arriving in Brisbane. First landfall in the North of the state usually indicates that they came via the Suez Canal as opposed to rounding Cape Horn on the trip out here. The ship had 483 souls total, 426 1/2 of which were 'statute adults' (over 12). As some of these people disembarked at various ports down the coast, the final number disembarking in Brisbane was 287 souls, 252 adults. They landed in Brisbane 3 Jan 1888.
  Notes By Betty McCowan:
Gladys Ferguson once told me that her mother was a remarkable and wonderful woman. I always believed that she came out from Ireland to care for her Uncle Isaiah and look after his household. However, it is more likely that she came out as a prospective bride for her cousin, Robert, in an arranged marriage. They married four months after her arrival. Annie's brother, John, travelled out with her. He returned to Ireland a few years later where he sadly died at only 21 years of age.Annie brought with her from Ireland a bitter dislike and distrust of the Catholic Church. Her family were prominent members of the Loyal Orange Order. There had been instances of graves having been dug outside the gates of Ferguson family homes as a warning by Catholics to Protestants.
Fred Ferguson remembered a smiling grandmother and told of her practical remedies for bringing him and his cousin, Gordon, into line. For example, Annie sewed lace on the bottom of Gordon's shirt to encourage him to tuck his shirt into his trousers.Annie was 83 years of age when she died in her home at Salisbury, eight years after the death of her
 husband.
