Notes
a. Note:   Jeremiah Cushing, Rev (1654 - 1706) and his brother Matthew, sons of Daniel and Lydia (Gilman) Cushing, were adopted and raised by their uncle Lieutenant Matthew Cushing. Jeremiah was educated for the ministry under John Morton of Hingham and graduated at Harvard College in 1676. In 1681, he was preaching at Hingham; and in 1682 and 1683 he was at Haverhill, but declined an invitation to be settled there. After this mention is made of his occasionally preaching at Hingham. He was ordained pastor at Scituate 27 May 1691. His salary was 60 pounds. He was also a minister at Provincetown, for several years before 1700. He probably only preached to transient population in the fishing season.
The term of Jeremiah's ministry was short, he having deceased 22 March 1706, in the fifty-first year of his age and the fourteenth of his ministry. There is a monument of his memory in the old burying ground near the harbour. He suffered a lingering illness, having been obliged to suspend his labours for several months.
