Note: Maximilian Buchanan Stockton 1824 - 1908 Doris Rogers rogdrcr@gte.net July 1999 shows on ODC that his death dateis March 12, 1918. R. E. Bob Fariss, the Goliad Library Cemetery Book, and the GoliadHistory Book all three say birthdate is January 1, 1824. Earlier Ihad June 1, 1824 as his birthdate, but my source is now forgotten. He is in the 1850 Washington county census. He is age 56 born TN in the 1880 Goliad County soundex=1824. He is age 76, born TN January 1824, in the 1900 Goliad Countysoundex. * * * * * ** * * The origin of the name Maximilian Buchanan: From "The Bumpas Family from Person County NC", 1972, page 54: "Thefollowing references to the Bumpass pioneers are taken from A HISTORY OFLAUDERDALE COUNTY ALABAMA by Jill K. Garrett. "Gov. William Wyatt Bill of the Alabama Territory made his firstappointments in Lauderdale County in February of 1818. James Bumpas wasappointed Justice of the Peace of the county court. "As early as 1808, there was another road leading to Lauderdale knownas Muscle Shoals Road, mentioned in Maury County Court Minutes for thatyear. Also in that year, the same county court appointed a commissionto view, mark, and lay out a road to cross Elk River, in the mosteligible way, to the head of the Muscle Shoals. One of thesecommissioners was Gabriel Bumpass, to be later identified with theWaterloo settlement. This latter road presumably let to Fort Hampton. "The town of Waterloo was laid off in 1819. A stock company, with 51original shareholders, was formed and the trustees for this companywere: Tyree Rodes, Maximilian H. Buchanan, German Lester, JohnMcCracken, and Gabriel Bumpass. These men were from Giles County TN andhad been associated together in other land transactions in that state." * * * * ** * * Maximillian was 12 when his father died in 1836. In her book "TheStory of the Bumpas Family," Mootie Clemmons Cherry states that UncleMack accompanied his aunt Harriet Bumpas and her husband Hugh McIntyreto Texas December 27, 1839. Source 1: Henrietta divorced Mack in 1855, says Charles R. ChuckRogers 5218 South 144th St Tukwila WA 98168 206-243-2023rogdrcr@gte.net in a personal letter to ABA June 14, 1999.Henrietta then married the great-frandfather of Chuck before 1858. Source2: Did Mack divorce Henrietta about 1858? Henrietta had aboy by J. Y. Rodgers about 1859. John Boyd and J.J.Ratliff (Siddie's half-brother?) were present at thewedding April 25, 1858. Apparently her mother Jane had died before the1858 wedding. In his package of February 1998, James Evan Stockton submits a fullpage of Mack's land transactions, 1862 to 1903, "page 15" of theforthcoming book. From "The History and Heritage of Goliad County," 388 pages, in theKenedy City Library, compiled by Goliad County Historical Commission, edited and written by Jakie L. Pruett and Everett B. Cole, 1983, EakinPubl. Inc., Box 23066, Austin 78735 : "Emily Bumpas Stockton kept a tavern, situated on the road betweenAustin and Houston. "Her son Mack and and his wife Siddie moved from the Lee County areato Charco in Goliad County in the 1880's."
