Notes
a. Note:   Brent Holcomb's book "Greer and Related Families" in Clayton Library:
A surveyor's book shows that in 1746 Luke Smith had land run out; LukeSmith son of Obadiah 400 acres. Two other persons by the name of LukeSmith appear in the area.
"Luke Smith apparently lived in the part of Lunenburg County which wascut off into Halifax county and still later into Pittsylvania county VA.Luke Smith appears on the 1755 list of tithables in Orange county N.C.,and in 1758 Luke Smith and wife "Judah" of N.C. sold several tracts ofland in Halifax county VA to Jacob Ferris, John East, James Ferris, andJoseph Farris.
"Luke Smith arrived in S.C. by April 3, 1770, the date of the precepton his 250-acre plat on the north side of Tyger River, dated May 10,1770. This precept date is the same as the that of his son-in-lawThomas Greer. Probably they journeyed together to Charleston to applyfor their land."
