Notes
a. Note:   1889 - 1983
  Started school at age 6
Gus took Trigonometry, Chemistry, Physics, and German in Giddings HighSchool.
Gus worked for his uncle Lafayette Fariss, who had a Coal Oil distribution business and a wholesale grocery business in Giddings. Gus at age 14 had an oil wagon on a regular route to Paige, Lexington, and Lincoln. The farmers paid cash, there being no banks or bank accounts.Gus kept good books. Uncle Fate was pleased with his accuracy.
Gus attended Sam Houston Normal in Huntsville. Only one summer's workwas needed to get a Teacher's Certificate. We think he taught schoolfor a short time, just long enough to know he didn't want teaching to behis career.
It was the business world that called, reports daughter Augusta. He attended Toby's Business School in Waco, taking shorthand, typing, andbookkeeping. This is the Four-C School in Waco in 1992. Aunt Annie reports a different name for the school.
Gus went to Chilton as a bookkeeper for Mr. Gaither. It may have been a lumber business.
Aunt Zie's father owned the biggest store in Chilton. It had a soda fountain. Her brother Elwyn Flowers worked there. Later, Gus turned to farming and Elwyn ran a service station. During the depression the family nearly lost the farm.
His grandchildren loved to visit him and Zie in the summer. He played dominoes and other games with them, and took them for rides on the tractor. Augusta Zie Fariss once asked him, "Poppa, why do the grandchildren like you so much ?" and he answered, "Because I try to be the grandfather that I never had." Gus was only five years oldwhen both grandfathers were buried.
He was honored at the Dedication of the new wing of the Texas Ranger Museum in Austin. This addition was financed by the Knox twins and family, When Mr. John Knox's fabulous gun collection was brought to this museum. The wing has the gun collection, and also is a much needed meeting hall. Gus had contributed his knowledge of Central Texas history to some of the organizers.
Gus had a fabulous memory for names, dates, facts, like an encyclopedia. Gus Fariss is a Treasure Trove who could have been utilized more.
