The same Bible sheet shows marriage date as November 16 instead of 15.Helen Bess Fariss Foster, and Salt Lake City Ancestry File, say theywere married on November 15. Another source had said November 16. Was he named LaFayette because his Uncle LaFayette Fariss fromTalladega County, Alabama visited in Texas in December 1859 ? ? HelenBess Fariss Foster reports May 21, 1992 that the Fariss family had aclose personal friendship with the original Marquis de LaFayette, andthat there was a "Lafayette" in all generations after that. Lyda and Fate were baptized at the same time in 1890. Bert went away to school at Cornell Institute in San Marcos. Fate had an Oil Distribution business in Giddings (coal oil), andmanaged a big Wholesale Grocery business which supplied many localgrocery stores. It was located just north of the main intersection. Hewas associated with T. P. Walker Co.; Giddings Groc. Co.; and CowdinGroc. Co. of Flatonia, Texas. Augustine Gus Fariss, his 14-year old nephew, worked for him. Gus hadan oil wagon, and a route around Page, Lexington, and Lincoln. Thefarmers paid in cash, there being no banks or bank accounts. Gus keptgood books. Fate was pleased with him, and his accuracy. Fate Fariss was a School Trustee. Fate Fariss was real strong in theBaptist Church. He, brother I. J. Fariss, brother-in-law WilliamWilson, and Dr. York were the power voters who made the churchdecisions. The managers of the Grange store were (1) John W. Collier, (2) I. J.Fariss, (3) Bud Cherry, and (4) LaFayette Fariss. Charlie Wilson Jr. said July 24, 1993 that Fate would often whistle, but Bert would make him stop. Write up this story. A big block of granite fell off a railway car as a trainload was onthe way to Galveston to build the seawall and jetties. Fate hired acrew to bring the granite block from the tracks to his house. The blockis still there in 1993. Fate and Bert's house was bought by others, andturned into a restaurant in the 1990's. He and Bert are buried in the Giddings City Cemetery. Seven are buried on the same Giddings lot: William Holmes Fariss Amelia Scott Jones Fariss William T. Wilson Bert and Fate are buried on a differentlot. Lyda Fariss Wilson Milton S. Merchant Mary Adelia Fariss Merchant Infant son of Sam and Ruby Fariss The only two burials on the adjacent 8-place plot are: Andrew Mack Fariss Clara Koch Fariss The body of the stillborn son of Sam and Ruby Fariss was sent toGiddings, with the intent that the infant be buried on the cemetery lotowned by his grandparents, Fate and Bert Fariss. But by a mistake ofpersons in Giddings, perhaps the preacher or the funeral home, the babywas mistakenly buried on the William Holmes Fariss lot.
