"Emily Bumpas Stockton kept a tavern, situated on the road betweenAustin and Houston. Records show that Sam Houston and his daughterMaggie were among the prominent people who spent the night there whengoing between the two cities.
"Emily Bumpas Stockton died in Bell County on December 13, 1882 andis buried in the cemetery at Salado.
"Her son Mack and and his wife Siddie moved from the Lee County areato Charco in Goliad County in the 1880's." (ArchieNote: Mack andSiddie were married at Clinton in DeWitt county in 1858, so they movedfrom Lee county earlier than the 1880's. The family is in Karnes Countyin the 1860 Census, and is in Goliad County in the 1880 Census. Theirfirst four children were probably born in Karnes county, and the othersin Goliad county.)

" Some of the descendants of their 13 Stockton children still live inthe Charco area in 1983.
"The 'old home place' of M. B. Stockton is no longer standing, butthe site is marked. The Stockton cemetery on the San Antonio River isstill used by families of Charco.
"Of the third generation of Stocktons in Goliad County, only MaudeStockton Wallace remains a resident in 1983. Evidence of other Stocktondescendants in the Charco community is found in church, school, and landrecords.
"Aunt Maude, in her 80's in 1983, recalls when her fatherD.H.Stockton 1861-1923 and her Uncle Maximilian 1867-1932 built a cottongin in Charco. Later, her brothers Walter and Edward ran a cotton gin,grocery store, and meat market. At that time, Charco was a thrivingcommunity with board sidewalks. Her brother Keith ran a grocery storeand service station at the crossroads until the late 1950's. Hergrandparents were charter members of the Charco Baptist Church.(ArchieNote: She is Leona Maude Stockton 1896- , daughter of DouglasHayden Stockton 1861-1923, and granddaughter of M.B.Stockton 1824-1908.)
From page 52: "Charco at one time had 3 general merchandise stores,2 blacksmith shops, 2 garages, 2 barber shops, a confectionery, a dressshop, a millinery, a cafe, 2 meat markets, a bread shop, a grist mill,and 2 cotton gins.
"Of the fourth generation, Wayne Stockton is the only Stockton whoactually makes his home in Charco. He is the son of Walter A.Stockton.
"William K. Stockton, Frank M. Stockton and their sister SelinaStockton Carpenter still run cattle in the Charco area. Their fatherwas Frank Stockton. Their mother Mabel Callaway Stockton Davis is theonly living member of the generation of M. B. Stockton's children.(ArchieNote: Mabel married Frank Allen Stockton 1884-1939, son of M.B.and Sydie.)
"Hugh Stockton Jr., Sue Mae Stockton Garrett and Annie KatherineStockton Noreika own acreage in the area. They are the children of HughS. Stockton Sr. and Annie Callaway Stockton.
"William Edward Stockton's son Lincoln lived in Charco, and his foursons still maintain property in the Charco community. They are fifthgeneration landholders there.
"Keith Stockton heirs John Kenneth Stockton and Dorothy StocktonChamberlain have ranch interests in the Charco area.
"The Stockton descendants still hold annual reunions in GoliadCounty."
A nephew of M. B. Stockton, Ira Augustine Clemmons (son of SaraElizabeth Stockton and James Austin Clemmons) and his wife IsabelleBethany had ten Clemmons children in Austin County and Waller Countybetween 1876 and 1890. Then they moved to Charco and had five moreClemmons children between 1891 and 1898.
