Note: 1849 - 1886 Earlier I had spelled her middle name Adeline, but Adaline is from theJo Knox Marcia transcription of the family Bible. The Scott Cemetery data in "A History of Lee County Texas," 1974,page 435 reports that her tombstone gives a deathdate of November 1,1886. "Elvira Adaline, Consort of A. P. Stockton and daughter of W. A., Jr.and Leithy Knox, died Nov. 11th, 1886." Archie cannot remember thesource of this quote. The 1860 census microfilm certainly seems to say "Aloysia Knox,"but Mickey Bowers May 19, 1995 firmly and insistently states that hermiddle name was Adeline. Aloysia Knox, female age 11, born Louisiana, is in the 1860household, Lexington, Burleson County, along with Robert Knox age 13born LA and William Knox age 19 born MS. Eloysia has to be ElviraAdaline. Elvira attended the college at Old Independence, which later becameBaylor University. Her daughter Annie Stockton Fariss had her childrendrive her back to Independence on special annual celebrations at thecollege, because her mother had attended school there. Evidently, Washington County was a huge original county. In 1837, Fayette County was formed out of Bastrop and Colorado. In 1846, Burleson County was formed out of Washington and Milam. In 1874, Lee County was formed out of Bastrop, Burleson, Washington, and Fayette. Augustine Knox Gus Fariss always thought it interesting that hisgrandmother Elvira Knox Stockton had children born in three differentcounties but all in the same house, the Stagecoach Inn in Evergreen nearLincoln, which Emily Bumpas Stockton owned and apparently bequeathed toAugustine Partnership Stockton: Letha Ann Stockton 1867 Washington County Emily Stockton 1869 Burleson County William Murry Stockton 1871 Burleson County Eola Stockton 1874 Lee County Mary Penn Stockton 1879 Lee County Elvira Stockton 1883 Lee County The mother Elvira Knox died in November 1886 at age 37, when Eola wasonly 12, Mary Penn was only 7, and Elvira was only 3 years old. Oldest daughter Letha Ann Stockton became the mother for the familywhile still only 19. She then married I. J. Fariss in July 1887 at age20. Eola and Mary Penn stayed with their father, but little Elvira wasgiven a permanent home in the I. J. Fariss family. Eola Stockton married in 1894 at age 20, and Mary Penn married in1903 at age 24. Elvira Stockton married James Warren in 1909 at age 26 in theBaptist Church in Giddings. The bride came down the stairway at homewearing a beautiful rose-colored dress. In addition to Elvira Stockton, Mary Penn Stockton shows in the I.J. Fariss home in the 1900 Census. She must have been attending NormalSchool, the teacher college in Giddings. The I. J. Fariss home wasalways open to relatives and itinerant Baptist preachers. Pamela says that Elvira is buried in Scott Cemetery near Giddings, and we think this cemetery is in Old Dime Box.
