a. Note:   From the Jo Knox Marcia transcription of the family Bible: "John BatesKnox was born in Lee County, Texas Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock June the28th A.D. 1881."
  John Knox just worshiped his wife. He referred to her as "The Madam"as a term of respect. He wrote a poem to her.
  The John Bates Knox family bought the William Alexander Knox Jr. homein 1925, after his uncle William lost his wife Betty in 1925. WilliamKnox left Giddings in 1925 to move to Brownwood to be near his son Harryand daughter Carrie, but he retained the Presidency of the bank until hewas sure that the next President would be I. J. Fariss. He would notapprove of anyone else.
  From The History of Lee County TX, 1974, page 52: "John Knox ofGiddings was a surveyor for 54 years and an abstractor for 50 years. Hewas known as Mr. Lee County, because of his being the principalauthority on county history. Mr. Knox was born in 1881 at Knox Lake inOld Dime Box in the central part of the county, the son of Robert A.Knox and Fannie Williams, both of Lee County. He was reared on hisparents' farm.
 "In 1910 he became County Surveyor after being elected on a write-invote. He was re-elected by this same procedure ever since. Mr. Knoxbecame an abstractor, and founded the Lee County Land and Abstract Co.
 "Knox married the former Edna Monroe, a registered nurse of anAntonio, in 1917. They moved into the home he purchased from his uncle,W. A. Knox, in 1925. He lived there at 236 S. Manse until his death onSeptember 26, 1964.
 "A lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, Knox was ruling elderand clerk of the session in the local Presbyterian Church for over 45years.
 "He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge since 1907, and was PastMaster of the Lexington Lodge for one term. He was a trustee of theCentral Texas Area Museum at Salado.
 "His lifelong dream was to someday open a county museum with money hehoped to realize from oil royalty. He did not live to see oilproduction on his property in the county.
 "A member of the Lee County Historical Survey Committee, Knox andother members were responsible for the erection of a monument to Gen.Robert E. Lee on the courthouse lawn.
 "One of his most fascinating hobbies, a gun and relic collection, wasstarted over 50 years ago. His gun collection is known to be one of thebest in the state.
 "When it came to Lee County history, Mr. Knox had names and datesplanted firmly in his memory. He knew not only the big thingsconcerning county history but also the lesser and just as importantincidents that made life interesting and unusual in this county."
