Notes
a. Note:   Herman Charles Joekel 1865 - 1913
Annie Fariss Ballard reports in 1994 that Uncle William A. Knox hadthe "first" General Store in Giddings. He kept his money in a safe; hekept other people's money in his safe; he had checks printed with thename of his store on them; soon he was in the banking business before heeven knew it. Thus was Citizen's State Bank born in 1906.
The "second" General Store was "Joekel and Williams," meaning W.Estill Williams. The two men were business partners; had a successfulbusiness; lived near each other in Giddings; and the families visitedtogether as close friends. The Joekels named one of their sonsFrederick Estill Joekel. Estill Williams named one of his sons CharlesJoekel Williams. The son William Herman Joekel worked in this store.
Then the two men had some kind of serious falling-out concerning thestore. The store failed, or maybe they sold it, but Annie FarissBallard says that it went out of business. The two men never spoke toeach other again. The families became estranged.
After the two men died, one of the widows made the first approach tothe other to make amends. After that, the grown children of bothfamilies became half-way good friends again.
