Notes
a. Note:   1796 - 1875 Father of William Holmes Fariss, grandfather of IraJones Fariss, great-grandfather of Robert Ernest Fariss.
From the photocopy of a hand-written sheet: "Thomas Israel Fariss, their oldest child, was born Oct. 24, 1796." He was born in AmeliaCounty, Virginia.
He apparently is on the 1830 Census for Jefferson County, ALA, age30-40. His wife is age 15-20.
Thomas Israel's wife Emily Martin died at age 23, when son WilliamHolmes Fariss was only 4 months and 20 days old. Thomas Israel was leftwith three little boys in 1834. We may suspect that slave women helpedraise his little boys.
He is on the 1850 Talladega Census as age 53, born in Virginia.William Holmes Fariss, age 16, born in Alabama, is living with him.LaFayette Fariss, age 21, born in Alabama, is already married to MaryJane Machen, and is living with his in-laws. The middle son Thomas W.had died in 1847.
In the 1860 Census, he is living alone, with a 13-year-old boy as ahelper. Lafayette is working in Shelby County, and Mary Jane and thetwo children are living with her parents. In the 1870 Census,Lafayette is again living with Thomas Israel, because second wife HepesaTruss Fariss had died in November 1869.
We have no evidence that Thomas Israel ever re-married. To fail tore-marry was unusual for the day.
Thomas Israel had slaves Jo, Ted, and Rachel.
For four poignant letters written to Texas to his son William HolmesFariss in 1854, 1856, 1859, 1860, see the Notes for William HolmesFariss.
Thomas Israel is buried in Old Mardisville Cemetery, Talladega County,Alabama. Photos of the marble markers for Thomas Israel, Emily MartinFariss, Thomas W. Fariss, and LaFayette Fariss are available, as well asthose of Thomas Isaac Fariss and Stephen LaFayette Fariss in WinterboroBaptist Church Cemetery.
