Notes
a. Note:   William Fariss 1755 - 1802 Both dates are only speculative.
 Father of Thomas Israel Fariss.
 Grandfather of William Holmes Fariss.
Great-grandfather of Ira Jones Fariss, Thomas, Thee, Eck, Fate, Lyda.
According to Amelia Scott Jones Fariss' pencil notes on tablet paper,he came from England to Amelia County, Virginia with his brothers Jacoband Bolah. Her notes suggest 1780. But all of this is wrong. Therewere Fariss families in Virginia from about 1635. William, Jacob, andBowler are from an old established Virginia family, and are among theeleven children of William and Judith Fariss.
According to the pencil notes, William married three times. It isunclear which wife was First, Second, or Third. Rachel Bottoms may havebeen his first wife. The name of the second wife is not known. Oneof the wives, by Amelia's notes, is the mother of Jennie and RebeccaFariss. Rebecca married her cousin Jackson Fariss, who may be the sonof Martin Fariss.
"In the memory of LaFayette Fariss, as told to him by his father,Rachel Bottoms was the third and last wife of William Fariss."However, Elizabeth Fariss must have been the third wife, because sheis the mother of Thomas Israel, Armistead, and Asa, judging of thisevidence:
In 1808, Elizabeth Fariss, Administratrix of the will of WilliamFariss, submitted Guardian Accounts for 1804, 1805, 1806, 1807, and 1808for Thomas Israel, Armstead, and Asa Fariss, "the orphans of WilliamFariss." Amelia County Wills, Vol. 8, page 81. Elizabeth Farissreported to the court as required in 1804, 1805, 1806, 1807, and 1808 onthe expenses for the upkeep of the three boys, and the boys are named.
Elizabeth filed with the "September Court 1812" her expense statementrelated to the upkeep of the three boys. One line item was "To cashpaid Sheriff for Bowler Fariss 13 pounds 4 shillings"
Elizabeth Fariss entered into a Pre-Nuptial agreement with JoshuaBrizendine in Amelia County in 1815; this document mentions "Thomas I.Fariss, Armistead Fariss, and Asa Fariss, children of William Fariss andthe said Elizabeth."
Elizabeth in her 1815 Amelia County Pre-Nuptial agreement wasprotecting her rights to previous property: eleven slaves who arenamed, together with "their increase"; three feather beds and furniture;and "all her stock of every kind." Her new husband signed thisagreement "in consideration of the sum of Five Dollars to him in handpaid." The three sons Thomas Israel Fariss, Armistead Fariss, and AsaFariss are specifically mentioned, and will inherit this separateproperty upon the death of Elizabeth.
It was Elizabeth, not Rachel, who was reporting to the court. It wasElizabeth, not Rachel, in whose Pre-Nuptial agreement the three boys arenamed. Thus in saying that Rachel Bottoms was the third and last wife,Thomas Israel may have said it wrong, or Lafayette may have rememberedit wrong, or maybe the third wife was Elizabeth Rachel Bottoms.
Maybe she was Elizabeth JOHNS, born 1779, whom Melvin K. Fariss saidmarried one of the numerous William Fariss.
On June 1, 1793 a certain William Amos Faris married Elizabeth Key,daughter of Jacob Key of Campbell County, in Campbell county, Virginia,"by John Chappell." (1) Reported by WPSY; (2) refer also to Page53, Vol. 2, Feb.1993, of the "Farris Files" newsletter of Sandy McIntireof Cedar Rapids; (3) also reported in "Marriages of Some VirginiaResidents 1607-1800," Campbell County Marriage Records page 4 of Letter"F," Duck Hill Library, Dorothy Ford Wulfeck, Vol. I, Genealogical Publ.Co. Inc. Baltimore 1986.
From the same "Farris Files" of Sandy McIntire, Issue 4 of 1995, page23, we have a family group sheet submitted by Trueman E. Farris Jr.,7012 W. Oklahoma Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53219 (414) 543-7155, in which theseven children, with spouses, are shown for John Farris, born about1742, died Jan. 20, 1807 Louisa County VA and Lucy Harlow born about1750, married July 26, 1762 at St. James North, Goochland County VA.Child 2 William Farris born about 1767 married Alsey Hughes on August13, 1787 in Henrico County VA. If Trueman Farris is correct, it rulesout Alsey Hughes as one of the wives of our own thrice-married WilliamFariss.
It will come as no surprise to learn that the father of the aboveJohn Farris is one of those innumerable William Farris.
A certain William Fariss was appointed Surveyor of Roads for AmeliaCounty in January 1798. Amelia County Court Orders Vol. 22, page 91.
The will of one William Farriss mentions Jacob Farriss, June 2, 1798in the Henrico County Wills Vol. 2, page 464; DAR page 35.
The will of John Winfree dated July 18, 1793 was probated January 26,1795, and mentions one of his daughters as Elizabeth Fariss (CumberlandCounty Wills 3, page 43). But WPSY said on Oct. 31, 1993 that the willof John Winfree goes on to say that his daughter Elizabeth Fariss is thewife of JOHN Fariss, so this throws out WINFREE from our branch. Itstill leaves Elizabeth Somebody as the mother of the three boys.Archie has no idea where this John fits in.

April 1, 1799: The will of William Faris is proved in Henrico CountyCourt Orders Vol. 8, page 441, and Bowler Faris is one of the executors. This is also shown in Clayton DAR by Phillips page 37. ThisWilliam's wife is Judith, and his children are Sarah, Prudence, Susanna, and son Callom Farriss. We believe that William and Judith are theparents of eleven children, including our own William, and the elevenwere Callom, Bowler, Jacob, William, Orania, Joel, Rebecca, Sarah,Prudence, Susanna, and Judith.

A certain William Faris served in the Revolutionary Army for threeyears in a unit called the "Continental Line."
According to the notes of Amelia Scott Jones Fariss, brother JacobFariss "belonged to the Regular Army of the Revolutionary War." Acertain Jacob Fariss is documented in Cumberland County, and in 1835Jacob Ferris of Cumberland County, age 82, applied for a RevolutionaryWar pension. Jacob Fariss is in the 1810 Cumberland County FederalCensus.
One who appears to be a different Jacob Fariss is in Henrico County.
From Amelia Fariss' notes, brother "Bolah Fariss moved from Virginiaand was lost sight of." However, Bowler Fariss is documented in AmeliaCounty through 1817. A nephew of his named Bowler Ferriss is inHenrico County, whose mother is Orania "Oney" and whose brother WilliamFerriss was deceased before 1825.

A certain William and Elizabeth Fariss of Albemarle County sold 30acres of land in Fluvanna County on September 25, 1802 to John B.Magruder (or John Bellagruder) for "20 Pounds Current Money." The deedwas recorded at the courthouse at Palmyra. Fluvanna County Deeds, Vol.4, page 134.
WPSY writes January 1995 that this Elizabeth's husband William diedin Fluvanna County.
The Last Will and Testament of a certain William Fariss was proved onSeptember 5, 1803 in Henrico County (Richmond), VA. Robert C. Farriss, who is probably Robert Carter Ferris of the line of Ann Avery Hunter, was the Executor. Henrico County Court Orders, Vol. 11, page 163.Robert Carter Ferris may have been the Executor for our William who ishis brother-in-law, or he could be the Executor for his own fatherWilliam Ferris II.
Don't know where William Fariss died, or is buried. Our William's sonThomas Israel Fariss moved to Alabama, from which a big clan evolved inTexas.

There are 6 to 20 William Fariss in Colonial Virginia, and we must becareful in sorting out the records.
"The FARISes IN VIRGINIA" is a book by William Henry Phillips, published in 1948. It has been integrated into a larger book, "TheFARRIS Family in Virginia, Tennessee, and Texas, 1607 to 1950", typed bythe Houston Chapter of the D.A.R. Daughters of the American Revolutionin 1957. These are unconnected abstracts of birth, marriage, death, and court documents, and some good descendency data, but there are nofamily histories. William, Jacob, and Bowler Faris have multipleentries, but cannot be definitely connected to each other. In the willof John Winfree, Elizabeth Fariss is his daughter.
