Notes
a. Note:   Notes on Elizabeth, sister-in-law of Bowler Fariss:
WPSY says on Oct. 31, 1993 that in the will of John Winfree, hisdaughter Elizabeth Fariss is reported to be the wife of JOHN FARISS, andnot William Fariss. So Elizabeth was not a Winfree.
In the 1815 Amelia County Pre-Nuptial Agreement between Elizabeth andJoshua Brizendine, it definitely states that one "Elizabeth" is themother of Thomas Israel, Armistead, and Asa.
"In the memory of Lafayette Fariss, as told to him by his fatherThomas Israel Fariss," Amelia Scott Jones Fariss writes in her pencilnotes that Rachel Bottoms was the third and last wife.
But (1) maybe Lafayette was mistaken. Elizabeth was the third wife, and mother of the three boys, or (2) Milton G. Fariss suggests thatthe third wife was Rachel Elizabeth Bottoms.
It was Elizabeth, not Rachel, who was selling land in 1802 toBellagruder. It was Elizabeth, not Rachel, who was reporting to thecourt in 1804, 1805, 1806, 1807, 1808 on the expenses for the upkeep ofthe three boys. It was Elizabeth, not Rachel, who was marrying JoshuaBrizendine in 1815.
Strangely, the same newsletter issue reports that Joshua BritainBrazendire married Elizabeth Farris in February 1796 in Amelia County. The date is a confusing item; it should read 1815, because 1815 isdocumented.
The "Farris Files" quarterly newsletter of Sandy McIntire of CedarRapids reports on page 53, Vol. 2, Feb. 1993, that William Amos Farismarried Elizabeth Key in Campbell County, VA on June 1, 1793 "by JohnChappell." She was the daughter of Jacob Key. Could this be ourElizabeth.
Maybe our needed Elizabeth was Elizabeth JOHNS, born 1779, whomMelvin K. Fariss said married one of the numerous William Fariss.
  **************************************************************************
A certain William Amos Faris married Elizabeth Key on June 1, 1793 inCampbell county, Virginia, "by John Chappell." Refer to Page 53,Vol. 2, Feb.1993, of the "Farris Files" newsletter of Sandy McIntire ofCedar Rapids. Also Marriages of Some Virginia Residents 1607-1800,Campbell County Marriage Records page 4 of Letter "F," Duck HillLibrary, Dorothy Ford Wulfeck, Vol. I, Genealogical Publ. Co. Inc.Baltimore 1986.
From the same "Farris Files" of Sandy McIntire, Issue 4 of 1995, page23, we have a family group sheet submitted by Trueman E. Farris Jr.,7012 W. Oklahoma Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53219 (414) 543-7155, in which theseven children, with spouses, are shown for the parents John Farris abt1742 - Jan. 20, 1807 Louisa VA and Lucy Harlow abt 1750, married July26, 1762 at St. James North, Goochland Cnty VA. Child 3 William Farrisabt 1767 married Alsey Hughes on Aug. 13, 1787 in Henrico VA. Thus, ifTrueman is correct, it rules out Alsey Hughes as one of the wives of ourown thrice-married William Fariss.
It will come as no surprise to note that the father of the above JohnFarris is William Farris.
The will of John Winfree dated July 18, 1793 was probated January 26,1795, and mentions one of his daughters as Elizabeth Fariss (CumberlandCounty Wills 3, page 43). If it were Elizabeth WINFREE who marriedWilliam, then she and William were married in 1793 or earlier. (WilliamHenry Phillips, 1948, Houston DAR Compilation, The Faris Family inVirginia, page 30.) But WPSY said on Oct. 31, 1993 that the will ofJohn Winfree goes on to say that his daughter Elizabeth Fariss is thewife of JOHN Fariss, so this may throw out WINFREE from our branch. Itstill leaves Elizabeth Somebody as the mother of the three boys.
