Note: George & David Sinclair were brothers who crossed the ocean from Scotland to canada in a sailing vessel in the early 1800's. They settled on land in Brant County, but the government needed the land owned by the Sinclair's for an Indian reservation, so they had to find another location. David & Janet left Brant County in 1854 and came to Bothwellby train and then to Dawn Township by oxen team. They brought with them their four children. They settled on a farm of 100 acres on Lot 20, Concession 12, Dawn Township. About 4 miles away was the village of Florence, where the corn and grain were made into cornmeal and flour. Florence also had a sawmill where logs were squared, put on a raft in the Sydenham River and then shipped to England for ship Building. David had to walk through the woods to serve as an elder in the Presbyterian Church in Florence. In 1879 a frame church was built in Oakdale and David served as an elder there.
