Note: Known as Jennie. Following sene to me on April 23, 2012 from Peter Farmer of Menlo Park, California. farmer.peter@gmail.com Hi Noreen, and thanks again for the photos! No need to send more, as the relationships get fairly distant from there. Sara Jane Farmer was the sister of Alfred Augustus Farmer, my great-grandfather. So my great x 2 grandparents (John O'Reilly Farmer and Henrietta Marie Gawthrop) are your great x 3 grandparents. Kate Ford, a nice person in Ontario, recently headed to Shetland United Church Cemetery in Euphemia Township, Lambton County, Ontario, and took photos of the headstone of John (1833-1906) and Henrietta (1836-1911). Also buried there is their son George Herbert Farmer (1864-1892, sometimes listed in records as Herbert George Farmer). I've attached these photos. John O'Reilly Farmer was the son of the Irish/English immigrant Michael Farmer (1789-1852) and his wife Mary Ann O'Reilly (1804-1858). Michael was the first Farmer in North America. He arrived from Ireland in Erin Township, Wellington County, Ontario in 1827 and received a land grant in Esquising Township, Halton County, in 1834. He was Protestant and, most likely, a member of the British military. John's wife Henrietta was the daughter of William Gawthrop (1776-1860) and Mary Griffith (1795-?). My best guess is that William Gawthrop was the son of Richard Gawthrop (1736-1796), who died in Maryland. Richard Gawthrop was an interesting character. He was born in England and lived with Sarah Archer, with whom he had 3 children. This got him into trouble with the authorities because Sarah was the widow of Richard's brother, and marrying your brother's widow was against the law. (Hamlet's uncle had given that idea a bad name.) So he did the honorable thing: he ditched her and the children. Soon after, he was convicted of grand larceny and sentenced to spend 7 years in the colonies. When released in Maryland in 1776, he decided to stay, got married, and had 10 children, all of whom moved far from the Eastern seaboard. One was named William. I strongly suspect that this is our William and that he moved (or fled) to Ontario from Maryland. Perhaps he was a British Loyalists; possibly he and/or his father picked the wrong side in the War of 1812. That was the usual reason for people leaving the US for Canada back then. Albert Augustus Farmer moved to Wisconsin around 1880, and worked at the Sheboygan Chair Factory. He had four children: " Frederick Ralph Farmer (1878-1948) " John Thomas Farmer (1880-1960) " Forrest Lee Farmer (1886-1960), my grandfather " Herbert Howard Farmer (1890-1905) Albert died in Chicago, where John and F. Lee Farmer lived. I've uploaded a detailed descendants report for Michael Farmer to the web, in multiple formats. I won't guarantee the information, but it's the best I've pulled together to date.
