Note: From Rootsweb Worl Connect on Feb. 22, 1849. He sold this land N ov. 20, 1851 and removed to Rose Twp. Oakland County, MI. His first wife 's name was SAMPSON (first name unknown). His first four children liste d were by this wife. The Sampson girl evidently died, and he married Joa nna Scott and their first five children were born in Canada. He had no c hildren between 1837 and 1842, and the death of the first wife and his re marriage occurred during that time, as the first child by Joanna Scott wa s Sarah, born in 1842. State census records of MI show the birthplace o f the children, and the first to be born in MI was George Orville, born i n 1854, so we know he came from Canada at about that time. James Jr. wit h Joanna appear in the Oakland County, MI census of 1860. On May 27, 186 2 he sold this land to William C. Predmore and removed to Elkland Twp., T uscola County, MI. He made a will Aug. 21, 1866 (a petition was filed Au g. 21, 1966 for admission of James Doying's will for probate, listing th e 14 children as heirs) that provides us with a list of the children, an d died a short time afterward and is buried with Joanna in the cemetery a t Cass City, MI. Joanna died about 1889." In Cass City Cemetery lot #4 7 "the following are laid away" - James Doying and wife Joanna; John Doyi ng and wife Mary; Orville Doying; Rosanna Doying. James' will is on file in Caro. Joanna submitted a list of children in A ug. : 6. Marriages and Births of Shipton - 1) James DOYING, son of James Sr. , of Shipton, married Anglican Church, 13 Dec 1820 Catherine Doyle. 2) H enry DOYING, son of James & Catherine, was born 6 May 1824, baptized 1 2 Oct 1824, Ang. Ascot, QC. I believe this to be our James. It is poss ible the child, Henry, died young, as I find no other mention of him. How ever, Henry DOYNE is the witness for the death notice of a James Doying w ho died 28 June 1854 in New York at the age of 44, the son of John DOYNE/ DOYEN and Mary ROLLINS. Henry would have been a first cousin to this Jame s. In Harry Doying's papers there are several mentions of a third wife . Records are found for other family members under the spelling of Doyn e in Canada, so it is possible the Henry Doying and Henry Doyne are the s ame person. : 7. James is mentioned in the will of James Doying I, dated 12 May 1842 , who died in Shipton. : 8. 1860 Census Rose Township, Oakland County Michigan 1500-1502. Letter from Harry Doying to William Doying, Westfield, New Jersey . "in 1866 or at about that time my great-grandfather died, leaving som e property in Canada, and my grandfather supposed that he was the oldes t child and would inherit it. He took a trip over to Canada, and then i t was the older half brother showed up and of course inherited the proper ty under English law as it was at that time. This was the first my grand father knew that he had a half brother older than himself, his father eve idently being rather a reticent man as concerned his early life. In thi s connection I might add that James Doying was a considerable "strong man ". He could do stunts such as picking up a crow-bar with his teeth, an d it is told of his borowing a plow when he lived here in Michigan, and c arrying it a mile on his shoulder from the neighbor's home to his place . He died from the effects of a blow on the head received from the branc h of a tree which struck him while he was riding on a load of hay."
