Notes
a. Note:   According to William Morton Ricker, Frances Sharpe was born in West Virginia. Her family was among the first families of Virginia. Frances was a Primitive Baptist. How Frances and Martin met and married is not known to us. According to her son, our Grandfather, she was a strict religious woman and a thrifty housewife. She spun and wove linen sheets and blankets from their own sheep. She raised geese and made fat feather beds which they put on solid walnut four poster "corded" beds. Cords were rope used instead of slats or springs.
When the stormclouds of the civil war began to gather, Frances insisted that Martin take her and William to Louisiana, where her relatives lived. They went to Atchafala Bay. Martin, according to story, went home and enlisted into the Union Army. When the war was over, Martin went to Louisiana to take Frances and William back to Maine. Frances insisted that William remain in Louisiana to be raised as a southern gentleman and they sent the necessary money to see that he was well taken care of.
