Funeral services will be held at Trinity Chapel, 25th st., near Broadway, on Saturday morning, 29th inst., at ten o'clock. [handwritten: E. Howard Leggett ? Cousin] Obituary from the Clapp family Bible, probably pasted by Howard Clapp Leggett. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: The following short letter is from my first cousin twice removed, Howard Clapp Leggett (1876-1969) to my father, John Milton Leggett (b. 1931). I met Howard once in about 1965. Throughout the writing, I have added notes in brackets to provide clarification. Howard begins by mentioning, somewhat inaccurately, the five children of his granduncle, John Wright Leggett (1826-1887). There are notes in pencil, made perhaps by JML's father, Milton William Leggett, (1894-1970) trying, with partial success, to clear things up; these are in parentheses. In actuality, the five daughters and their four husbands were: 1. Fanny Maria Leggett 05 March 1852 +David Fletcher Porter December 1844 10 October 1897 2. Emilie Sanford Leggett 30 June 1853 14 June 1909 (unmarried) 3. Anna Brennan Leggett 02 May 1856 +George Bennett Paine 24 September 1856 4. Mary Leggett 05 July 1861 +Elbert Austin Briggs 30 December 1854 5. Margaret Wright Leggett 06 March 1866 +Frederick Leander Bingham 19 December 1865 Howard goes on to mention some people who would have remembered these relations, as well as the two families John's sister Catherine's two daughters married into, the Footes and the Beldens, as follows: Catherine Maria Leggett 19 November 1817 26 November 1890 +William Mortimer Allen 25 November 1814 04 December 1878 Margaret Leggett Allen 12 January 1841 22 October 1913 +Emerson Foote 28 April 1837 23 January 1908 Sarah R. Allen 07 October 1847 01 March 1927 +Charles Dennison Belden 09 January 1843 12 February 1912 The meat of the letter deals with Ed Leggett, (1842-1906). This is only the second reference I have ever seen to this man. (The other is in a letter of Mortimer Allen Leggett, 1837-1930), and also mentions his horsemanship.) It also tells me some new things: a penciled note claims that he had a son, Ebert (but p. 31 of the 1910 Supreme Court of N. Y. County report on descendants under the estate of Thomas Leggett says he indeed left no issue); also that he drank himself to death. David John Leggett, b. 1961, 7 January 2003 Dear John [John Milton Leggett, b. 1931] 7/20/50 Afterthought as to Briggs family I think there were 5 Leggett (William H son, John W.) girls Anna, Emmie (not married), Mrs. (Margaret) Bingham, Mrs. Comstock (crossed out, "Mrs. Porter" written in) and Mamie (Margaret) Briggs. Briggs had just started a hardware store on 125 st and the family some speculated as to the outcome but I guess was a success this was shortly after his marriage near 60 years ago I guess your Grandmother [Kate Adelia Bagnall Leggett, 1864-1960] remembers these folks also Aunt Florence [Howard's aunt, Florence Huggins Leggett Lesley, 1863-1934] often mentioned Mamie Briggs as she did the Foot(e)s and (Sally) Beldo(e)ns. (her mother Kate Allen sister [of] John W.) The real horseman of the cousins that I personally was acquainted with this dose not include the great uncles was Ed Leggett [Edward Wright Leggett, 1842-1906] he fell in disfavor because he liked to drink (had son Ebert) -2- his father [also Edward Wright Leggett, 1821-1865] left him 100,000 dollars also his brother [unclear as to which brother] the same he previous to that was Salesman for the old firm of Leggett + Bro. My father [Edward Howard Leggett, 1845-1927] managed this business when Frank [Francis William Leggett, 1833-1907] went to the [Civil] war as Captain of the Michigan Cavalry [Co. F. 9th Michigan Cav.] later the firm was Clintons father still Leggett + Bro. Ed bought an apartment house the tenants all showed paid up receipts for rent all were folks none had paid a cent rent so he lost out his rich uncle Mr. Baker [someone on his wife's side of the family?] sent him money father got him a job at one of our Printers to fold Circulars he thought he was paid by the printer but we gave the printer the money to pay him in small amounts so he could not drink it up. His uncle gave him swell clothes so he had a fine silk hat looked like the real stuff we were good friends he died with cancer in his mouth was awfull Howard :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: http://www.italiangen.org/NYCDeathresults.ASP?EnterSurname=leggett&EnterSoundexCode=&EnterFirstInitial=&kindenter=exact Surname Given Name Age Month Day Year Certificate Number County Soundex Leggett Edward W 65 y Dec 27 1906 3933 Manhattan L230
