Note: as in New York City, where he would have had to have been in order to be courting Florence H. Leggett in 1920. This George Lesley was 47 in 1920, while we know Florence was 57. We do not yet know the year of their marriage, but when the 1930 Census images become available and searchable, we will surely find them married by then. George remarried sometime after Florence died in 1934 at the age of 70. This George would have been about 60 at that point; younger, and more likely to remarry. 1920 United States Federal Census about George H Lesley Name: George H Lesley [George I. I recently became aware (via Ancestry.com and Find-A-Grave) of George’s final resting place in Section D-1 of your cemetery. The photo of his gravestone appearing on the Find-A-Grave website is odd in that the stone appears to contain just his full name, without dates. I am thinking this may be just because the stone has sunk so much that the dates are now below ground. (See photo.) George married my great grand aunt, Florence Leggett in 1927. It was a first marriage for both of them, though she was about 64, he 56. Needless to say they had no children. Florence died in 1934, and is buried in our family plot in Woodlawn in the Bronx. We thought George might have remarried, but there is no evidence of this from the graves in the plot in Oakwood. It seems George was dead by the time of the 1940 Census. What do you have in your records about him? I have also enclosed the information we have on George H. It looks like he did not remarry as he is buried with no one nest [sic] to him. The Stone is a 'foot stone', which in many cases only had the name of the person on it. There is a large main monument and his dates could be inscribed on that. Also in many cases, when an older person dies and is 'alone', inscriptions don't take place. I hope this is helpful to you. On Find-a-Grave, I did see the photo of the large central monument in the plot, but the photo is of insufficient resolution or closeness to read any of the inscriptions, which may well be too eroded to see very well anyway, looks like a marble monument, which has suffered from acid rain. Yes, I have seen that inscriptions sometimes do not take place if there is no one left who cares to see that it gets done. In George’s case, dying in 1937, he had at least a sister, Dora, who did not die until 1945, but who knows her level of interest or ability at that point. Someone got her dates carved on a stone. Should I send you a check in the mail or call to give you a card payment?
