  Dear Mrs. Leggett;
It seems that since I began working weekends at WHAS my voice has traveled to many areas in this nation. It is so very interesting to hear from you since I have just recently become interested in my family tree.
I shall begin with my great-great-great-grandfather......
MICHAEL...... Born in Pennsylvania about the time Thomas Jefferson was inaugurated President...the same day if I am not mistaken.. then moved to Indiana where he is buried in the Jordan Cemetery just outside of Fremont.
JOSHUA...... Was going West with a wagon train and was attacked by Indians someplace near Kansas or Nabraska; at that time the family scattered. Joshua made it back to Angola, Indiana and settled on Lake James. He is also buried in Jordan Cemetery...he had about seven brothers.
Albert....... Worked on the railroad and was killed on the railroad when in his 20`s or 30`s. Buried in Ridgeway Cemetery.. Ridgeway, Michigan. Had many brothers and sisters mostly living in Indiana. Ira, Freeman, Michael, Fred, Ruth, and Lena are the only ones I remember.
WILBER....... My grandfather...born 1896..still living.. one sister Gladys.. buried in Ferndale Cemetery, Riverview, Michigan. One brother Merton died as an infant. Wilber setteled in Wyandotte, Michigan.
MERTON.......My father...born 1918... died 1969 buried in Ferndale Cemetery, Riverview, Michigan... two sons David and Paul... one daughter Martha. One brother Wesley who has two daughters Janis and Ruthann.
DAVID........ Me..... born October 22, 1944... married... no children... currently in the United States Army stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky. I will be returning to Michigan in June of this year.
That about completes what I know about my immediate part of the Showalter family.
Another lady who heard me on the radio... Mrs. Prescott W. Townsend... sent me the following information about her branch of the family.
She was born a Showalter high in the Cumberland Ranges West of Roanoke Virginia... her great-great-grandfather may have been the first Showalter to settle in the colonies about 150 years ago... his name was David Showalter... as is the name of one of her uncles... and a nephew. David seems to be a favorite family name!! Mrs townsend came to Indiana about 50 years ago to attend college and has lived there ever since. She said she traveled a great deal in Europe between the wars.... I suppose WWI and WW II. While in Europe she traced the Showalter`s to Appenzell, Switzerland... from where we migrated about 1683. Another interesting note is that her fathers name is Wesley... the same as my uncle..
Also worth mentioning is that my grandfathers uncle was named Freeman.. I really don`t know where he lived.. but will check with my uncle about it and let you know.
Well I guess that roughly covers what I know about the Showalters... I have taken the liberty of sending a copy of your letter to Mrs. Townsend so that she might compare it with what she knows about the family.
And, finally... I am planning to be in Pittsburgh the weekend of May First... If time permits I will call you so that we might further discuss our family history.
  Sincerely,
  David Showalter

In determining the amounts of the specific legacies and division of my residual estate, as provided in Paragraphs TWO and THREE, I have taken into consideration that my gross estate as of the date of this my Last Will and Testament is in the approximate range of $120,000. I am not unmindful of the possibility that my gross estate may diminish substantially between the date of my Last Will and Testament and the time of my death. It is, therefore, my will that in the event my gross estate for Federal Estate Tax purposes at the time of my death does not equal an amount of $120,000 before the payment of my debts, the expense of administering my estate, and taxes including inheritance and death taxes, I direct that all the bequests, specific legacies and division of my residuary estate set forth in this my Last Will and Testament be decreased in the proportion that my gross estate at the time of my death bears to the amount of $120,000.
FOURTH: In the event any of my legatees are minors, I direct that their bequests be paid to their parent or parents who shall have the authority to apply the proceeds of such legacy for the health, support, education and general welfare of such minor.
FIFTH: My Executor shall have the absolute discretion and for such period or periods as he deems advisable to retain all or any part of the property owned by me at the time of death and any property received in substitution therefor.
SIXTH: I appoint my son, JOHN M. LEGGETT the Executor of this my Last Will and Testament. Should my son, JOHN M. LEGGETT, fail to qualify or cease to act as Executor I appoint my daughter, ELIZABETH L. BLACK, the Executrix. I direct that my Executor and his successors shall not be required to give bond for the faithful performance of their duties in any jurisdiction.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have set my hand and seal this ______ day of __________, 1974.
