Note: Gen. 31. William Penn Leggett, born on September 7, 1861. No record of his marriage available, if he ever did marry. He died April 10, 1924. Source: Section No. 2 - Division No. 1 Descendants of One Named Gabriel Leggett Compiled by Branches and Generations Starting of the Twenty-fifth Generation of the Old Leggett Record Brought From Essex, England In the Year of 1635 - A.D. Page 20 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Page 2 William Penn Leggett the second son of Thomas Jr. and Hanna was born in 1861 and grew up in Dutchess County having been a successful farmer for many years but the lure of the big city attracted him to Pittsburgh, Penn. where he in 1893 married Martha Jane Spear and after an extended training period in the steel industry became a representative of the Pittsburgh Steel & Wire Co. with headquarters in Charleston W, VA. His territory for traveling was the states of Virginia & West Virginia. They never had the pleasure of any children of their own. Uncle Will like his father liked to make things of wood. He always carried a couple of well sharpened pen knives and while waiting for an appointment could be seen carving a monkey or some other animal out of a peach pit or a piece of hard wood. It is Microsoft Word. Howard in the Letter is James Howard Speer. Will is Bvt Col. William Finley Speer and his wife is Mary Starritt/Sterritt Power Speer. William Finley Speer dies in 1893. Jennie is Martha Jane Leggett. There are a lot of other details to describe the other people mentioned in the letter and the two JPG pictures. In the first JPG picture #12 Martha Jane SpeerLeggett is the first one on the right seated. In the 2nd JPG picture #1 Martha Jane Speer Leggett is seated 2nd from the right. I did not find William Penn Leggett in the pictures. Tom Speers .............................................. N. Q. SPEER BERKELEY SPRINGS, W. VA Mar. 28/11 [1911] My dear brother Cal, I was very glad indeed to get your letter of 20th inst. and to hear from you. I am glad you wrote me as you did, telling me of your self and family, of Stewart and John, also about your mothers death. I too have often wondered where you all were, had heard of all being in Texas, then later that you were some where in Pennsylvania, then last summer when in Bellevernon Dr. Vanvoorhis told me that he had heard of your mothers death, but I was never able to get any word regarding the family or the location of any of them, but now I hope we may get in closer touch with each other. Brother Will died Sept. 1893 just ten years after our father died. His family, Mary lives in Pittsburgh with her youngest son, Harry, who is married and they have two children. Her son Will is married and lives in Chicago, they have three boys. Louis still engaged as Capt. Of a large Tow Boat, what we call a down river Coal packet, running Pittsburgh to New Orleans. He met with a serious accident about two years ago, on his boat, his life was despaired of for many months, but he has recovered so as to be able to fill his position on the boat, he has wife and three boys, their home is in Pittsburgh. Nellie is married, has one child living, one dead, they live near Boston Mass. Sister Retta still lives at Earleigh Heights Md, has two daughters, Jennie and Mary, both at home with her, and one son Solomon married and lives some where in same neighborhood. One son Louis died about 20 years ago. Sister Mary Park and her husband both died many years ago. Louis M. Parks their oldest son is married, have two children, was a prominent business man located in Minneapolis when last heard from. Their second son Thomas, became a professor in (I think) Chicago University, but has been dead several years, never married. Their two daughters, Sadie and Retta were, when last heard from, in Tower Hill, Ill. Where their parents died. Retta is a teacher, neither married. Rob. Porter and Celia live on a farm near Mars, Allegheny Co., Pa. Their daughter Pearl, now Mrs. Hughes, married last fall, her husband a farmer, and live in same neighborhood. Celias youngest child a lad about 17 years of age is at home, their other boys (three) are scattered, there where abouts unknown to me. Brother Rowland was married, had a family, removed to Denver Colorado many years ago, and I have lost all knowledge of him. Brother Edgar was injured on a Railroad in Illinois in 1892, died the following day. We buried him in Old Rehoboth Cemetery. Alline and I are still holding our own fairly well. We lived in Pittsburgh until 1904, in Dunbar Pa part 1904-1905, then came to Berkeley Springs, W. Va. and have made this our home for six years. Kept house the first three years, since that time have been boarding, on account of only the two of us in family for the most part of the time, as our children Howard, Jennie, Marchand, Fannie, Hamilton, Annie, Cecil and Noah Q, Jr. have all been married except Noah, Jr. and all away most of the time. Howard, Annie and Cecil live in Pittsburgh, Marchand in Pacific, Mo. Fannie in Atlantic City, N.J., Jennie Birmingham Ala, Hamilton in Berkeley Springs, and Noah, Jr. has been away most of the time with some R.R. Contractors. I have been connected with the glass sand business most of my life and still am, although not now actively engaged. Alline and I celebrated our fiftieth Anniversary, “Golden Wedding”, Aug 21st 1910 with our children all present at Pittsburgh. We thought of you all and would have sent account of same had we known the addresses. You will be interested to learn that Dr. Vanvoorhis is still living in Bellevernon, 88 years old. William Jones, Fell Jones, John Cunningham and Robt Linton all old citizens of Bellevernon died within a year. You no doubt remember them, Alex Brown too, he died some years ago. There but few of our old acquaintances living there. Alline and I join in love to you, your wife and that dear little girl, and will be interested to hear from you all. Your brother N.Q. Tom From: t.speers [mailto:t.speers@comporium.net] Sent: Friday, September 09, 2011 12:58 PM To: Leggett, David - FNS Subject: RE: William Penn Leggett Hello David, I also included 2 pictures of the Rehobeth Church. One is taken looking west toward I-70 and the stones should be to the left or south of the church. The RehobethCh JPG is of Finley/Cook Road and the Church. You might be able to see this scene from I-70 going East from Belle Vernon. There is an I-70 exit to Route 201 and to McDonald’s and Denny’s and another just up the grade going toward Route 51 at a country road crossover. There is a Norfolk Southern RR side track back on Finley Road a few hundred yards from the church and a PA Road Landmark sign about Col. Edward Cook who was a fellow officer of George Washington. There is a stone fort house south on this road where George visited his fellow officer twice probably during the 1780’s or 1790’s. The National Road Route 40 crossing of the Youghiogheny River land used to be owned by my 4th great grandfather Jacob Spears between 1769 and 1816. George W., and Mason and Dixon stayed there. We spell our last name 4 ways and I am in contact with 55 or more relatives. Jacob named Bourbon Whiskey in 1810 in Paris KY. Actor Noah Strausser-Speer Wyle is a cousin descended from Jane’s brother James Howard Speer. There is a connection further back to Harry Reasoner the newscaster and John Wayne’s first wife, William T. Sherman, James G. Blaine and OBAMA – some of these are “By Marriage”. Noah Q. started the huge glass sand quarry in Berkeley Springs WV in 1877 and 2 or 3 other major Glass Sand quarries in PA and VA. The one in WV is a mountain range of sand and is now being mined by U S Silica Corporation. There is a little train engine and dump car exhibit on the road leading into Berkeley Springs that must have been used in the first operations. Jane’s brother Hamilton and wife Anita Buchanan lived on the left going into town and are buried way up the hill in Greenway Cemetery. Noah also had another home nearby when he retired. You can find some of this story on the internet by Googling “Noah Q Speer”. Noah Q owned the Pennsylvania White Sand Company and an island in the Allegheny River. I have some other pictures of Noah’s 50 wedding anniversary in 1910 at the island. One of the two pictures probably shows Jane and maybe her husband William. Most of the women are dressed in white dresses except for sister Francis. I am not sure if I can identify all the people. I will have to scan them into JPG files again. I have had trouble with some old files when my last computer died. Martha Jane Speer’s tombstone name appears as Jane Speer. Her father Noah Q Speer’s and Louis Marchand Speer’s tombstones are nearby. Louis’s is hard to read. Louis founded North Bellevernon. Noah’s Q’s gf Noah Speer/Speers founded the original BV in 1812/13. ETC. As I assume you saw my Rootsweb site, you perhaps saw my line, which goes from NYC through Pgh. I was always intrigued by this 3rd cousin 3x removed, who apparently married a Pittsburgher. I don’t know if he ever lived there, though…I wondered if the two branches of the family knew each other out in Pgh. My g grandfather, William Thomas Leggett went out to Pgh from NYC and founded the William T. Leggett Co. in 1886, which still exists today, though my father sold it. I have changed Martha’s name to Speers. I was born in Pgh, but we moved to Washington, Pa., when I was 13. My parents still live there. I know about the Speers-Belle Vernon Bridge. I assume Martha is actually from Belle Vernon, and buried in the same cemetery? Sure, would like to see the photos. Thanks again. Martha’s father was Noah Q Speer born in BV. Noah was heavy into the glass industry in Pittsburgh. As I remember two of his daughters delayed their marriages one year since Noah Q Speer’s brother Bvt. Col. William Finley Speer had been injured when run over by a trolley in Pittsburgh. They have 3 children, one is Noah Anderson Speer born 1979 and two are girls Gloria and Elizabeth. There are 17 Noah’s so far, 22 Henry’s and 7 Solomon’s. Noah Q Jr operated a restaurant on Rt. 22 in McKeesport, and later in Falls Church VA on Rt. 21 (that parallels I-81) at an important crossroad. The lower BV town sign JPG is attached. Did you know that this line from Noah Speer/s born 1769 at Gibsonton (now a part of BV) is directly related to Noah Strausser-Speer Wyle and by marriage to William T. Sherman and John Wayne’s first wife? Noah’s 11 or 12 siblings were born in VA (not Germany). We also are directly related to Harry Reasoner (who married Noah Sr’s sister Mary) and other important people. And we had significant neighbors like Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln (in 5 locations). Ron Reagan was my maternal great uncle’s back door neighbor west of Santa Barbara, CA. Notice the sign attached has both spellings Speer and Speers. We also have relatives that spelled their last name Spear (a few) and there are a lot of Spears in KY (2 lines) that I am now researching. Mike and I have a SFIA, Speers Family Internet Association where I try to keep in contact with cousins. I do not like to put my research on Ancestry.com. Lillian and Del built three homes including the one in Falls Church, Va. from which they retired. She was an accomplished seamstress and did many restoration projects for the Smithsonian Institute, from Civil War uniforms to the First Ladies’ Gowns. She was selected as one of the group to be responsible for the restoration of Old Glory to prepare it to hang in the lobby of the new Smithsonian National History building. Lillian and Del moved to Huntsville in 1985 to be near their only child and their beloved grandchildren. She lived out her faith in quiet ways from volunteering over 3100 hours with the HMH Auxiliary to supporting the Good Shepherd Mission and others in need in the community. She loved to travel.
