Note: Fifth Generation 95. Mary5 Embree (Sarah4 Rowland, Martha3 Seaman, Benjamin2, Captain John1) was born in Hempstead, Queens County, Long Island, New York 14 March 1723.(117) Mary died --- in New York, at age unknown. She married Thomas Leggett 4 March 1743 in West Farms, Westchester County, New York. Thomas was born 3 June 1721 in West Farms, Westchester County, New York. Thomas(118) was the son of Gabriel Leggett and Bridget. Thomas died after 25 June 1781 in New York, at age 60. He was mentioned in his father's will of this date. Soon after the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, Washington and his troops were forced to retreat out of New York City and took up their encampment at White Plains. The English troops took up their encampment within the city and on Long Island. Most of Westchester Co. laid between the two encampments and became a no-man's land, the farms being raided by Indians, Tories, English troops, and just plain outlaws. West Farms, of course, was in the middle of this area. One night in 1776, English troops under the command of Col. DeLancy surrounded the Leggett mansion and took possession of the farm and property. The family was driven out. They fled to Stillwater, Saratoga County where they lived on a farm that may have been purchased sometime before the Revolution. Unfortunately this site, the dwelling and outbuildings were to be within the Hessian Redoubt at the Battle of Saratoga. At the approach of General Burgoyne, the family attempted to escape danger by crossing the river to Easton, Washington County. Thomas and two of his brothers, however were taken captive. Thomas was taken to General Burgoyne's camp near Schuylerville and his two brothers were taken further to Fort Edward near Lake George. Here he fell in with a neighbor Concklin, who, after a fortnights detention, forged a pass for both. By this means the sentinels were deceived. Our heros swam the North River, [it was the early part of October] and ran all that night. The next day, they concealed themselves in the woods, and the following night kept on their way, avoiding all habitations of note. Not knowing the state of parties in the country, they skulked from one place to another until they reached Dutchess County where Concklin was known. Here they rested themselves and obtained food. Concerned about his family, Thomas continued on to the south. Upon reaching the safety of the American lines at White Plains, he hurried on to West Farms only to find his father's home burned to the ground, large noble trees cut down for firewood, and cattle & horses driven away. Thomas escaped from General Burgoyne in October of 1777. After finding his home in rubble, he joined a Continental unit in the area. After the war, he moved into the city and began his business career. There is no information as to where Thomas Sr. spent the war or the reminder of his life. He may also have gone to North Castle or he may have journeyed further north and lived with his family in Saratoga Co. It is known that Thomas Sr.'s family was the first of the Leggetts to convert to the Society of Friends and that they were the founders of that religion in Stillwater.
