  THE WILLIAM T. LEGGETT COMPANY.
Our company was founded by William Thomas Leggett, born in 1852 on the Hunt's Point, New York (now the Bronx) country estate of a family which had settled there early in the 1660's. His great grandfather, Thomas, had founded the family's mercantile interests on Pearl Street in New York`s lower East Side in 1780. In the 1880s, leaving his two elder brothers in control of the Leggett & Brother business, William T. Leggett came to western Pennsylvania as a salesman for the Diamond Portland Cement Co. Seeing an opportunity in this fast-growing area, he founded the William T. Leggett Co. in 1886, dealing in wholesale building supplies. The business was first located at 1025 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, remained there at least through 1896, and was moved to 2619-21 Liberty as early as 1908. In 1888, William T. Leggett married Kate Adelia Bagnall of Mercer County, Pennsylvania. In 1909 he died of tuberculosis-induced pneumonia at the age of 57, leaving Kate with their 14 year old son Milton and 9 year old daughter Helen to support.
Kate Leggett took over as president of the William T. Leggett Co. but hired managers for day-to-day operations. Following college and service in France during World War I, Milton returned to Pittsburgh to help his mother manage the company. During the 1920s, the company moved to the Strip District at 28th St. & the AVRR. As president beginning in the 1940s, he led the company to adapt to a changing industry. After World War II, he replaced heavy tonnage, low profit inventory such as sewer pipe, cement and slate roofing with aluminum windows and siding and all kinds of kitchen and bathroom fixtures and appliances. In 1955, he moved the firm from the Strip District to the Bloomfield property on the PRR mainline at 615 Gross Street.
Following Milton's death in July 1970, his sister Helen Corbett and his son John carried out his plan to sell the business to its employees over a number of years. The company moved yet again to the present location next to the 40th Street Bridge in Lawrenceville during this period. Unwise policies on the part of the head of this employee-owned operation led to the sale of the William T. Leggett Co. to Totem Lumber Co. as its wholesale subsidiary. When Totem Lumber in turn encountered financial difficulty, they sold the William T. Leggett Company to its present owners who again operate it as an independent family business.
  ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
An account of the Wm. T. Leggett Co. in 1971, as it began its transition from Leggett family business to employee-ownership following the death of the Founder's son, Milton W. Leggett:
  PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE:
 TUESDAY, APRIL 20, 1971
  SUPPLIER GREW WITH PRODUCTS
 W. T. Leggett Co. Diversified As Times Changed
The William T. Leggett Co., today a leader in the building supply industry in the Pittsburgh area is an example of growth through advances in technology.
Founded in 1886 on the site of the old Fort Pitt Hotel, the firm was originally limited to roofing and siding supply. But as new metals and other advances entered the building and home improvement market, Leggett incorporated them into its line, growing with the changes rather than trying to compete with progress.
The result is a company that today is one of the most versatile and diversified building supply firms anywhere.
During its growth, Leggett moved to Liberty Avenue, then to 28th Street and 16 years ago expanded to fill its present facilities at 615 Gross Street, formerly occupied by Federated Metals Co.
Martin Ragan, who became executive vice president of William T. Leggett Co. in July 1970 [with the death of the Founder`s son, Milton William Leggett], expressed the company philosophy this way:
"If any company is content to stand still in today`s market, it will not survive. Diversification is the key to sensible distribution, even on the wholesale level."
Diversification has been a byword of the Leggett Co. for many years.
Recently the firm became exclusive builder distributor for the Hotpoint line of ranges, air conditioners, disposals, refrigerators, laundry items and dishwashers.
As Leggett`s supply line was growing more varied, its basic line of building materials was also expanding. Today its roofing and siding includes the most sophisticated of materials in top-brand names, and includes a wide selection of such items as Reynolds aluminum colonial columns for striking exterior decor, beautiful and functional doors of many varieties, Coradco double-hung windows, and even the "electronic servant" automatic garage door opener and other items for easy living.
Its line of kitchen items expanded sharply in 1965 with the addition of the Nutone and Magic Chef appliance lines. Today these lines feature such innovations as double ovens featuring continuous cleaning and the latest advance - countertop cooking.
The new Magic Chef Counterchef provides lots more work space with less cleaning time and the last word in eye appeal.
Leggett`s kitchen, bathroom and carpeting department is headed by Ken Niklaus. Larry Golubic heads the general building supply line, and John LaPata supervises the accounting department.

At some point, the webpage was taken down, and I remember calling the company to find out when it might be put back up. The lady who answered the phone did not know. Some years later, I rediscovered the website on 31 January 2007. Although the address is indeed different, the email address remains the same, and has probably been active all along. One new thing is that they have established a showroom in Wexford. Gotta get them to correct that bit about "The United States was still at war with Spain, but Teddy Roosevelt had yet to ride up San Juan Hill." (Not in 1886; the Spanish-American War did not start until 1898!)

Think back a bit….to 1886 to be exact.
Grover Cleveland was President, and Queen Victoria was still on the throne in England. The United States was still at war with Spain, but Teddy Roosevelt had yet to ride up San Juan Hill.
Don`t look for many cars, Henry Ford had yet to make a Model T but in Flint Michigan, a buggy manufacturer made the first motorized vehicle.
Buick was soon to be the largest car manufacturer in the world.
Coca Cola hit the market in Atlanta GA at Jacob`s Pharmacy.
The American Federation of Labor was first formed, and in Chicago, the Haymarket Massacre gave the Unions their first murders. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated.
Pittsburgh was a small but flourishing river town, but W. T. Leggett was established and operating and serving the grandparents and great grandparents of the building trade whose descendants still come to us for quality products, and quality service!
While we no longer sell troughs and hitching posts, the company`s philosophy regarding quality and service has remained the same, come and compare before you buy elsewhere!
