Raised in Pittsburgh's Homewood section, at 314 North Homewood Avenue, he graduated from Sterrit School, Point Breeze. His father died of pneumonia in 1909, just before he enrolled at Shady Side Academy. He went on to Princeton University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1917 with a degree in classics, planning to study law. He joined the U.S. Army and served with the Coastal Artillery Corps at Fortress Monroe, Virginia before being sent to France with large railway guns. He was a First Lieutenant with the 5th Tng. Co., enlisted 25 August 1917, and discharged 25 January 1919. After the war he returned to Pittsburgh to help his mother manage the William T. Leggett Company.
On 12 September 1925, in Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Methodist Episcopal Church, he married Lucile McKee Showalter, Methodist daughter of former Congressman Joseph Baltzell Showalter and Ella Marian McKee. The ceremony was witnessed only by the respective families, with a luncheon following at the Mayflower Hotel. The newlyweds took the train to New York, where they stayed for a few days in the Roosevelt Hotel, no doubt paying calls on Leggett relatives, both those who had, and those who had not, been able to attend the wedding in Washington. They had tickets for the S. S. Sixaola, of the United Fruit Company Steamship Service, sailing for Kingston, Jamaica at 11 a.m. on 16 September, from Pier 9 North River. While in Jamaica, they stayed in the Myrtle Bank Hotel in Kingston, also owned and operated by the United Fruit Company. We have a photo album and scrapbook, embossed "Our Book of Memories--Milton and Lucile Leggett" which contains many pictures and other remembrances of their courtship, honeymoon and married lives through about 1960.
Returning from their honeymoon, they lived for a short time at 605A Worth Street, Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh. Milton is seen posing before the front door in his army uniform on Memorial Day, 1926. They were living there upon the birth of their first child, Elizabeth Ann, on 16 February 1927. Shortly thereafter, in May, 1927, they moved to larger quarters at 6521 Dalzell Place. Their second child, John Milton, arrived on 22 January 1931. In 1932, they moved to the northern edge of Allegheny County, to Bradford Woods Boro, to a house named "Oakview." During the family's nine-year residency there, he served on the Boro Council, and the children attended elementary school in a two-room school house. They rented a house at 800 Narcissus Street [Avenue], Clearwater Beach, Florida, during the summer of 1941. Lucile's mother and her only surviving brother, John, had moved from Washington, D.C. and were by that time residents of Tampa. Lucile was still in Clearwater Beach in September 1941, when Milton sent a telegram from Pittsburgh commemorating their 16th anniversary and announcing the signing of the purchase agreement for their first house. So they returned to Squirrel Hill, at 6632 Ridgeville Street, primarily so Liz could attend Winchester-Thurston School. They lived in Ridgeville Street until 1960, when they moved to a new house of their own design at 121 Hartwood Drive, Point Breeze.
During all these years, they attended Calvary Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh. At Calvary Church he had been a choir boy, and as a young man was an organizer of the Junior Vestry which did Sunday morning ushering. Later he served as a vestryman of this venerable parish, working for many years as an Every Member Canvasser.
As President of the William T. Leggett Co., Inc., Milton oversaw the expansion of the firm and the rapid postwar changes in the wholesale building supply business. He replaced heavy tonnage, low profit inventory such as sewer pipe, cement and slate roofing with aluminum windows and siding and all kinds of kitchen and bathroom fixtures and appliances. He moved the firm from the Strip District to the Bloomfield property on the PRR mainline at 615 Gross Street, and, in the late 1960's, to the present location next to the 40th Street Bridge in Lawrenceville. His plan to sell the business to his employees was carried out by his sister Helen Corbett and his son John.
A man with true Renaissance interests, Milton read widely, loved to hike and tour the back roads and historic sites of the U.S.A. and Canada. He had an amazing ability to relate easily to persons of all backgrounds; he took a genuine and compassionate interest in all whom he met. He enjoyed painting and photography, and he delighted Pittsburgh audiences with his antique "magic lantern" shows. A favorite spot in the backyard garden was his wildflower bed.
Milton died of pancreatic cancer at Columbia Hospital in July 1970. Not long after, Lucile gave up the house she had overseen the design and construction of only a decade earlier. She moved into an apartment in Oakland, near to the apartment where her sister-in-law, Helen Corbett, lived after the old family home at 314 Homewood Avenue was sold to Rockwell Manufacturing Co. and torn down.

  My dear Leggett: 10-11-1909.
I have just read in the paper the announcement of the death of your good father and at once I am writing you a note of sympathy.
When a boy in school I lost my father and I think I know fully how to sympathize with you in your bereavement because of my own sad loss of many years standing.
Knowing as I do so well in seasons of sorrow such as this through which you are passing the inadequacy of human words to soothe the sorrowing soul and the adequacy of the Divine I refrain from the one and commend you to the other.
May His grace sustain you, your mother and sister and all your friends in this hour of your deep affliction.
  As ever your friend,

  Dear Milton:- Oct 13, 1909.
I was sorry to learn yesterday of the loss of your father and I want to tell you that you have my deepest sympathy. Only those of the family feel the great loss I realize. Last year I was called home to experience the fist great sorrow in our family of seven-the death of my father-and the days since that have brought me to a fuller realization of what he had been and still is to us children. Fortunately you have your mother and sister left you and with your strong heartedness you will be able to master such situations, which are certain to come to everyone. I am glad that your father, if he had to leave, could rest assured that he was leaving one of your sterling worth to take his place in coming days.
Tho' the sympathy of many of the Academy boys be in most cases unexpressed I realized your sorrow is in part theirs for often these two days I heard you spoken of and I know what it meant.
With tender regards and full sympathy for you, your mother and sister,
  Your friend

  Dear Uncle Howard,
I have received your letter of September 30th and Oct 9th and was very glad to hear from you. I did not realize that it had been so long since I had written. Most of my correspondence, except that which goes home is very much behind hand. We are eternally kept on the jump here with no let up at all until Saturday. The whole camp is on a competitive basis and with so many older and technically trained men here it behooves one to be on the alert. To a certain extent, this place is much like college, except that we have classes and lectures morning noon and night and that everything is run on a military basis. On account of the mass of technical mathematical training required, the system of training is entirely different from that which infantry gets. We are exercised enough each day to keep us in condition and no more. The rifles and full equipment which we had at Oglethorpe have all been left behind. The time is too short for us to be lugging rifles around anymore. We are living in brick barracks. The regulars who ordinarily have them have been shifted into tents near the batteries. I imagine they will be glad to get back after the end of camp for it has been quite cool here recently - enough to require steam heat on several days. Norfolk and Newport News are the only cities of any size near here. Richmond is too far for a one day trip. I am enjoying the work - at least as far as it is possible under the circumstances. The strain is considerable since the resignation of any of us is likely to be asked at any time. Every week sees a few missing. Last week I was down at Newport News and looked over the naval and commercial ship construction under way there. Airplanes and battleships are common sights in the Roads.
  Sincerely, Milton

  Dear Nephew Milton:-
I am pleased to know that you have a few days at home and congratulate you on your appointment as 2nd Lieutenant Coast Artillery. I know that you are favorable to typewritten letters and I am also partial to them when I do not have to do them myself.
I shall endeavor to make early opportunity to write to your mother. She advised that you were appointed to Foreign Service, so I presume, at some time, you may possibly go to the other side, but I hope you may remain near us for a long period.
As I may not have your address around Xmas time I take the occasion to send a little in advance and herewith enclose. You have my best wishes and I trust all may go well with you. Will be very glad to hear from you wherever you may be.

  Dear Uncle Howard,
Today I had occasion to take a look at how cables are sent and I find that it would be extremely advantageous to have a code adress to send to in the U.S. especially in case I wanted to notify Mother for addresses count as much as the message. I believe that you have such an address and wish that you would send the same to me as soon as you can, for use in case I need it. We have been having a pleasant trip so far with very little happening that we can say much about. When you send the address be sure to state the code under which registered.
  Sincerely,
 Milton

This is the poor excuse for a priest who is rector of Calvary Episcopal, that grand old Ralph Adams Cram edifice, where my great grandparents, grandparents and father were parishioners. My great grandparents remembered the old building, nearby, now gone. I attended the "new" Calvary when a small boy visiting my grandparents. So sad.

Priest Files Suit to Retain Episcopal Property
 Associated Press
 Sunday, October 26, 2003; Page A11
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 25 -- A liberal Episcopal priest has
filed a lawsuit seeking to prevent conservative
parishes from taking church property if they split
from the national church over the appointment of an
 openly gay bishop.
The lawsuit filed Friday by the Rev. Harold Lewis and
the Calvary Episcopal Church names Episcopal Bishop
Robert Duncan Jr. and the Pittsburgh Diocese. It does
not seek damages but is part of a legal procedure
known as ad litem, which lets members of an
unincorporated association -- in this case, the
diocese -- assert that its members must comply with
 its constitution and bylaws.
The Pittsburgh Diocese and others have threatened to
split from the national church if the Rev. V. Gene
Robinson of New Hampshire is consecrated as a bishop
on Nov. 2. Episcopalians who oppose Robinson's
selection have met in Texas, Florida and elsewhere to
 consider a split.
The Episcopal Church's General Convention on Aug. 5
voted to confirm Robinson as bishop.
Lewis and his parish contend that canon law prevents
local churches from taking property with them if they
split from the Episcopal Church USA, the national
church group that is part of the worldwide Anglican
 Communion.
Lewis said the lawsuit "has nothing to do with Gene
Robinson; this is not about homosexuality. This is
about the Episcopal Church. The court, I think, will
uphold our position because the people of the
Episcopal Church in this diocese are entitled to the
use and the enjoyment of the property."
Duncan said he was disappointed but not surprised by
 the lawsuit.
"I think the action on their part is definitely
premature, since what we've done is try to protect all
 the churches' property," Duncan said.
Robinson's appointment has rocked the global Anglican
Communion, which is wrestling with questions over
same-sex unions and biblical authority. Around the
world, 77 million people are members of Anglican
denominations; the Episcopal Church USA has about 2.3
 million members.
