a. Note:   6, 1715; removed to Phillipsburgh and was a large landowner there. He died at Phillipsburgh, between March 17 and June 25, 1763. He was married about 1735, to Elizabeth --------. No record of her maiden name nor of her parentage has been found. As she is not mentioned in his will, she was probably dead before 1763.
  William3 Leggett was called William Leggett of Phillipsburgh, to distinguish him from his father, William2 Leggett of Westchester. He owned considerable property at Phillipsburgh, but as he died at a comparatively early age, there are not many records regarding him.
  In his will, dated March 17, 1763, proved June 25, 1763, he leaves his farm to sons Elijah and Ezekiel, and makes them executors; leaves a cupboard to daughter Sarah; other bequests to sons William, Isaac, John, when of age; adding "if my father please to leave me any money or effects, to be equally divided between all my children."
  The following is a copy of a discharge from the children of William3 Leggett, to their uncle Abraham Leggett, for the payment of the legacy of their grandfather, William2 Leggett:
  "To all whom these Presents shll come we Elijah Leggett Ezekiel Legget John Legget Joshua Sherwood and Sarah his wife late Sarah Leggett being the children of William Legget deceased who was one of the sons and Devisees of William Legget of the West Farms in the Borough of Westchester deceased send greeting whereas the said William Legget our grandfather in an by his last Will and Testament did among other things charge his estate which he gave to his son Abraham Legget with the Payment of Three hundred Pounds to our father William Legget in full of his Portion in one year after our said Grandfathers death, and whereas altho our father the said William Legget died before our Grandfather the said William Legget the Testator, upon which Doubts arose, whether the said Lagacy was not a lapsed Legacy notwithstanding which the said Abraham Legget hath well and truly paid and Satisfied to us the said Elijah Ezekiel John Joshua and Sarah the said three Hundred pounds the receipt whereof we do hereby acknowledge and in consideration where of we the said Elijah Legget Ezekiel Legget John Legget Joshua Sherwood and Sarah his wife do hereby Remise Release and for ever Quit claim unto the said Abraham Legget all and all manner of Action and Actions cause and causes of actions, suits, Debts, dues, sum and sums of Money, accounts of claims and demands whatsoever which we now or ought to have either in Law or Equity against the said Abraham Legget for or by Reason of any matter cause or thing whatsoever from the beginning of the World to the day of date hereof. In witness where of We have hereunto Respectively set our Hands and seals this Twenty-fourth day of May--anno Domini 1769.

  Earl Leggett provides us with William Jr.'s wife's maiden name, which may not really be her surname but rather her place of abode, i.e. Elizabeth OF Mount Pleasant, but his list of children is incomplete, naming only Ezekiel, even though he knew there were two, and possibly more children:

  William Leggett, the great-great-grandfather of William R., was born at West Farms, March 26, 1715, and removed to Phillipsburgh, Westchester county, where he owned land and died in the spring of 1763. He and his wife, Elizabeth, whom he married about 1735, had five sons: Elijah, who was born in 1737 and married Sarah Angevine; Ezekiel, who was born in 1736 and married Jane Angevine; William, Isaac and John.
