Smith Philip S. Smith Jan. 16, 1913 -- Feb. 6, 2004 Port Townsend resident Philip S. Smith died of a stroke at age 91. He was born in Pontiac, Mich., to Alfred Leggett and Grace (Stowell) Smith. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout before graduating from Pontiac High School. He volunteered for military service at the beginning of World War II and served with the Army Air Corps. While stationed in Denver, Mr. Smith married Jeanne Charlotte Knudsen on Sept. 12, 1944. After the war, he worked in sales and management for Mack Trucks Inc. and lived in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, California and Oklahoma. The Smiths retired to Eureka, Calif., in 1975, then moved to Port Townsend in 1998. His pastimes included working in his wood shop and anything having to do with the sea and sailing. He was an honorary life member of the Navy League, and also belonged to Elks. His love of words translated into writing poetry, memorizing and reciting classic poems and solving newspaper crossword puzzles daily. Survivors include his wife; sons and daughters-in-law Al and Corrine (Bugbee) Smith of Nordland and Paul David and Sue Smith of Barryton, Mich.; daughter Patricia Jeanne Smith of Greeley, Colo.; daughter and son-in-law Deborah S. and Jerry Stinson of Port Townsend; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services: Friday, Feb. 20, 1 p.m., memorial in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1020 Jefferson St., Port Townsend. The Rev. Elizabeth Bloch will officiate. A reception in the parish hall will follow the service. Kosec Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
