  My dear Cousin Kate-
I will leave off the Leggett this time if you will allow me for having that very nice picture of the whole family I feel now as if I knew you all and that you all belonged to us. I am so pleased that you really would like to have the

portraits and the clock for Ned and I have been thinking of sending them for some time as we felt that "Leggetts" should have them and it is such a satisfaction to us both to know that your family would value them so much and for us to send them now, for we have no one to follow us who would know or care. They are being

shipped to you today by Express, prepaid, and we have personally directed their packing so I hope they will arrive safely and in good order - of course we will not hear of your paying for charges for we are so glad to send them "free and clear" to you - I enclose the only snap shots we have of

ourselves so that you may have a rough idea of our general appearance - we cannot send pictures of sons, daughters, grandchildren, daughters + sons in law but in place send our Scotties of whom we are very fond. After teaching for 24 years at Columbia Engineering School - Ned finds Country life most wonderful and we are here the year round. Ned is very like his mother so

This letter was electronically transcribed 24 December 2003 by David John Leggett, after he retrieved it from the Westport Point, Massachusetts house of Dorothy (Corbett) Wertz on the occasion of her funeral in August of 2003. Kate no doubt saved it and passed it on to her daughter Helen, who in turn passed it on to her daughter Dorothy. The letter tells how one set of portraits of William H. Leggett and his wife Margaret, along with a grandfather clock, came to return to the Leggett family. There are two sets, and these are the originals, with the tallest grandfather clock.

  My dear Cousin Kate-
Thank you for your letter of December 7th- It was good of you to write- I have a Christmas card from Laura today with a message (written by another hand) saying that she did forget, so that quite sets matters straight- I was sorry to write her reminding her of her forgetfulness but there was nothing else to be done. I hope that it did not distress her-

We are having our first really cold weather of the season and it seems more like Christmas but I fear this year it will be overshadowed by this terrible war- I am glad however that this country has at last- taken a firm stand- We have such splendid courageous letters from our English friends- I hope you will have a lovely Christmas visit with your daughter- Dorothy must be a dear- Ned joins me in best wishes for a very happy Christmas to you and all our cousins- Cordially yours. This letter, written just after Pearl Harbor, with its references to war, is most interesting for its apparent reference to Laura Lacey Leggett, who, before today, I though had died in 1938. But she seems to be sending a Christmas card in 1941, although she is forgetful and not able to write on her own.
