Note: otLL (6-3) shows considerably more, but the record is still confused, especially as to his children. LotLL shows two marriages; but nothing concerning a Eunice Haight, widow of a Leggett, could this be a third? (There were already two other Haight marriages among Gabriel's brothers, sisters by the names of Mary and Miriam.) According to T.A. Leggett, p. 65-66, a Eunice Haight did indeed marry Wilson Leggett (20 April 1785-1819, in my father's handwriting), (on 24 August 1809, again in my father's handwriting). Wilson was the son of Charles Leggett (1762-1834). Eunice was a generation younger than Gabriel, (probably at least 40 years younger) as Wilson was Gabriel's first cousin, once removed. DJL Continuation of the line of Thomas17-g3Le1, Section 1 Begin generation four * 26-g4Le6 Gabriel4 Leggett, (Thomas3, Gabriel2, Gabriel1) born September 1, 1743 died March 23, 1838 (94 years, 6 months, 1 day) 1st married December 17, 1778 to Bridget Allen at the Easton Friends Meeting born August 20, 1742 died February 16, 1813 parents Jedediah Allen and Penelope Tripp, of Dartmouth, Mass 2nd married December 11, 1816 to Rachel Lawrence parents John and Gemina Lawrence Children (Leggett) (?): ß There are probably other children by his first wife 50-g5Le6 Rebecca5 51-g5Le6 Naomi5 Gabriel4 Leggett settled on a farm at Stillwater, Saratoga Co., New York, about 1776. Jedediah was the son of Increase and Rachel Allen. Penelope was the daughter of Othneil Tripp. Bridget's first husband was Stephen Potter, married December 8, 1759. Bridget and Stephen had at least one daughter, Elizabeth, she was raised in the household of her stepfather Gabriel4. In a list of Grantors of Deeds, 1806, Saratoga Co., N.Y., we find Gabriel Leggett, wife Bridget, of Stillwater, which is evidently Gabriel4. On the tax rolls of Stillwater May 20, 1789 there is the following entry: Property Tax Gabriel Leggett R £30 P £12 s 7 p 5 On January 28, 1795 at the wedding of George Davis and Nancy Mead among the witnesses were: Isaac30-g4Le6 Leggett, Gabriel4 Leggett, wife Bridget, and Charles36-g4Le8 Leggett . Saratoga County, New York, History of ; with Illustrations, Nathaniel Bartlett Sylvester, reprinted 1979 (org 1878) These were established very early 1765-1770. A log meeting-house was erected before the War of the Revolution, south of Quaker Springs. The founders of the organization were Gabriel4 Leggett, Isaac30-g4Le6 Leggett, Tibbett Soule, Thomas Wilbur, Fones Wilbur, George Davis, David Shepherd, John Walker, and others. Gabriel4 and Isaac30-g4Le6 were brothers their farms close to the present (1878) location of the George Weston farm. The deed for the site of the meeting-house bears date October 16, 1793, and conveys the title from John R. Bleecker to William Barker and Isaac30-g4Le6 Leggett, as trustees. Isaac30-g4Le6 Leggett was the first minister, and continued in that capacity for many years. He was a man of eminent worth, and withal possessing a decided turn for the pleasant and even humorous side of life. Taken prisoner by the Indians in the early times, he conducted himself with such hilarity, and played such pranks with the young Indians, tripping them up and pushing them into the water, that he escaped all severe treatment, and was not long after released. After the death of Isaac30-g4Le6 Leggett, several ministers for a few years spoke in the meetings until about 1820, when Andrew3 Dorland was generally recognized as minister of the society. OUR COUNTRY and ITS PEOPLE, A Descriptive and Biographical Record of SARATOGA COUNTY, New York, 1899; pages 38,86,95 Leggett, Isaac30-g4Le6 & Gabriel4, settled in Stillwater, but their farm extended into Saratoga. They were founders of the Society of Friends here. Stillwater 1783-1800 - Isaac30-g4Le6 & Gabriel4 Leggett, brothers, were here during and probably before the war. They resided near each other, north of Wilbur's ravine. Saratoga 1783-1800 - Society of Friends, a religious society - On October 16, 1793, John R. Bleecker sold to Isaac30-g4Le6 Leggett and William Barker, as trustees, a site for a meeting house. The first minister of this society was Isaac30-g4Le6 Leggett, who served many years, until about 1820. The record of his marriages and children is pieced together from records of the Friends Records, and is probably not complete. Authorities: ï Bible Records of Mary E. I have "met" one of Bridget Allen Potter Leggett's Potter descendants. When Marge Fish game me the information on Bridget Allen's eight children by Stephen Potter, I could not help wondering if Gabriel Leggett might not been married before also. The children of Bridget Allen and Stephen Potter are: Children: 1. Allen Potter (1760) m. Mary Hart 2. Mary, (1762) m. Ephriam Fish 3. Martha, (1764) m. Michael Mead 4. Penelope (1766) Twin m. Richard Salisbury 5. Desiah (1766) Twin m. Charles Devol, Westport Mass 6. Nathaniel (1768) m. Susan Hunt (d.1795) 7. Brigdet (1770) m. James Rowland 8. Elisabeth. (1772) m. Jacob Wright. After Stephen Potter died, she married Gabriel Leggett and had two more children, 1. Benjamin Leggett and 2. Joseph Leggett. The bottom line is that the descendants of Bridget Allen Potter Leggett and Gabriel Leggett have a bunch of "half" cousins who are descendants of the children from Bridget's first marriage. (How else do you describe the child of your parent's half-brother or half-sister?) I am making progress, slowly but surely, on the documenting the colonial population of the Saratoga Patent. Eventually, I hope to publish my data base as a community history. I am working with a retired Saratoga County surveyor. So our book will also have maps showing the plats of each of the colonial farms within the Saratoga Patent. I hope all is going well in preparation for the arrival of your second descendant and you and your wife experience a minimum of sibling rivalry.
