Note: oodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, N.Y., which Plot is immediately behind the William H. Leggett Plot (Lots 522 and 523, Section 9 Spring Hill Section, Magnolia Drive) near the Cemetery office at the Webster Avenue gate in the extreme northeast corner of the grounds. At least 20 Charles Beldens served in the Civil War in some capacity, according to online records. Eliminating those with the wrong middle initials, notes that seem to indicate their name was Belding, Beldon, Bellder, Beldia, and the wrong geography, and one from the Colored Infantry, we are left with two possibilities: Civil War Service Records Surname Given Name Middle Initial Company Unit Rank - Induction Rank - Discharge Notes Allegiance Belden Chas B 13 N. Insription on the gravestone of Maria Mullen who was a servant of Charles and Sarah (Allen), although buried next to the graves of Edith B. and Charles W. Palmer: MARIA M. Is it possible for you to acknowledge these messages? I want to help improve this wonderful resource. Thanks, David Leggett This terrible misreading of the name by the indexer renders Charles D. Belden (who actually turns out to be Mrs. Charles D. Belden, as he died in 1912) virtually unfindable. Found only in a search for her cousin, Laura Lacey Leggett. She was living with her first cousin, the widow Mrs. Charles D. Belden (Sarah R. Allen, daughter of Catherine Maria (Leggett) Allen) and her son, William Allen Belden, and servant Maria Mullen. Catherine Maria, her husband, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Belden are buried in the Allen plot in Woodlawn Cemetery, with Maria Mullen, "A faithful servant for 66 years." William Belden does not appear to be in the index at all, even under the creative rendering of his father's surname. Belaev, Charles D Age: 72 Year: 1920 Birthplace: New York Roll: T625_179 Race: White Page: 6A State: Connecticut ED: 163 County: Fairfield Image: 13 Township: Stamford Catherine Cluett Belden has no recollection of hearing of Laura Lacey Leggett. I thought her father might have, as he was born in 1925, and his father lived with her in the household, according to the 1920 Census. My father, born in 1931, can vaguely remember her as an old woman visiting his parents in the 1930s. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Pertinent affidavit from the Record of the William M.
