BIOGRAPHY: Enlisted voluntarily with the Australian Army, AIF number VX77700, at Coburg on 11th March 1942. He served, firstly, in the RAEME Tank Corps at the South Melbourne Army Workshops and on 31st March 1944 was transferred, with the rank of Corporal , to Transport Corps at Bandiana, near Albury-Wodonga, Victoria. Maintained his experience in the motor mechanic trade after discharge from theArmy, No.1 Australian Vehicle Park Workshop RAEME, on 9th November 1945.
Moved from Preston, a Melbourne suburb, in 1946 up to Benalla where he was employed as a heav y vehicle motor mechanic by John Stewart's International Harvester Garage in Main Street, Benalla. Residence was, firstly, with a Mr. (Daddy) Watson at 30 Magennis Street (Benalla-Shepparton Road) and then their own home at 18 Holloway Street, West Benalla. "Daddy" Watson was a retired veterinarian who regularly serviced Ned Kelly and his sister, Kate Kelly's horses throughout their time in northeastern Victoria. His home in Magennis Street still had only gas appliances and lighting.
In 1950 he started work with the SECV as a Caterpillar model D9 Bulldozer driver on the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme at Mt. Beauty, Victoria. The family moved to 29 Roper Street, Mt. Beauty in 1952 with Peter, their eldest son, being transferred for schooling at the Wangaratta Technical School.
In 1953 he was initiated into 1st degree of the Masonic Order (Blue lodge) at Bright and was raised to a Master Mason the following year.
In about 1953 Stewart was transferred, within the SECV, to the Security Patrol service division of the Hydro scheme mountain areas. In 1957 he was transferred to the Yallourn Power Station complex asa security officer and completed his service from 1960 onwards with the SECV at the Brooklyn, Melbourne stores site.
At that time they lived at 12 Dundalk Street, Sunshine, Victoria and in 1967 he sold the family home at Sunshine, bought a caravan, and with his wife moved to Caloundra in Southern Queensland where he died of asthma and emphesymia on March 13, 1968.
MARRIAGE: Married to Renerah Buchanan, commonly called May Mudge, in November 1936 and resided at 11 Home Street, Reservoir for some time. They moved to their own home at 95 Youngman Street, Preston in 1940. He was at that time employed as a Lino & Carpet layer with the firm of Foy & Gibson in Bourke Street, Melbourne doing on-site contract work for the firm.
DEATH: Death and burial details obtained from the sexton's records at the Kulganoor Cemetery, outside Nambour in Queensland during a visit by Peter and Rhonda Mudge on 25 November 1991. He was known commonly by his second name (Stewart) throughout his life and was buried in the RSL section of the Nambour Garden Cemetery, in Nambour, on 16 March 1968. Location of the plot is Section RS1, Row 3, Plot 20.
The sexton referred to at Nambour was Bill Sawrey Tel: Bus. (07) 7441-5790, after hours(07) 7441-5448. The 'ganger' at Kulganoor Cemetery who showed us the records was a David Parker.
