a. Note:   H84P-3V John (b. 17 Jul 1836) was born in Torwood Manor house, Torquay, Devonshire and emigrated to Sth Australia in 1855. On arrival in the province he joined the South Australian Government Police Force atGawler, on the 6th March 1855, as Constable Number 96. He served with the force for eleven years, being stationed for the greater part in various areas on the western coast of South Australia, including Port Lincoln and Streaky Bay, where he was one of the first constables at Cooeyana two and a half miles outside Streaky Bay. The first police station in Streaky Bay was built in 1862.
 He was promoted to Constable 2nd Class on 1st Aug 1856, Constable 1st Class on 12 June 1862 and Lance Corporal on 25 January 1866. He resigned from the force on 28 February 1866.
 He married his cousin, Agnes (b. Mar 1845), the daughter of his uncle William MUDGE (b. Mar 1816) on 27 April 1864 and had nine children of which information on the two eldest appears to be missing. Their first child, Thomas William, was born and died in 1866. Mention was made of a girl, Jessie, born in 1885 and deceased (aged 15 months) in 1887.
 Immediately after relinquishing his connection with the Police Force in 1866 he built the original Flinders Hotel in Streaky Bay and carried on its management, at the same time conducting a General Store in the premises adjoining the hostelry.
 For five years John and Agnes retired to private life in North Adelaide but ultimately resumed control of the hotel. He continued with the hotel until the close of his life on 24 June 1891.
 He could relate thrilling tales of his encounters with the aboriginal tribes from various occasions throughout his police career. He took great interest in all movements for the furtherance of welfarein the district.
 The Flinders Hotel, Alfred Terrace, Streaky Bay was managed by four generations of the Mudge family from 1866 until 31 March 1957. (Refer: Hotels & Publicans in South Australia 1836-1984, by J L Hoad.Ref table F27)

Immediately after relinguishing his connection with the force in 1866 he built the original Flinders Hotel at Streaky Bay and carried on its management, at the sametime conducting a general store in adjoining premises. He retired for a time but resumed control of the hotel until the close of his life on 24.06.1891. In addition he acquired a large area of grazing land. He married at Port Lincoln on 24.4.1864 his cousin Agnes Mudge, Daughter of William Mudge and Susanna Lear.

 The late John Mudge of Streaky Bay, was born in Devonshire, England on July 17, 1836, and came to South Australia in 1855. After his arrival in the new Province he joined the Government Police Forceat Gawler , with which body he was associated for eleven years, being stationed during the greater part of his time at various parts of the West Coast, including Streaky Bay and Port Lincoln. Immediately after relinquishing his connection with the force in 1866 he built the original Flinders Hotel at Streaky Bay, and carried on its management, at the same time conducting a general store in premises adjoining the hostelry. For five years he retired into private life, but ultimately resumed control of the hotel which he continued until the close of his life in 1891. Mr Mudge was a very well known resident of the West Coast, and could relate thrilling tales of his encounters with the blacks on various occasions. He took a great interest in all movements for the furtherance of the welfareof the district, and was respected as a successful businessman and a useful member of the community. He was married in 1864 to Agnes, youngest daughter of the late Mr. William Mudge, of Willunga, a pioneer of the State, and had a family of nine children, of whom three sons and three daughters survive.
