a. Note:   art of his education was at Bonners Private School at Morphettville, in Adelaide. He went to Naracoorte and was employed at Jones' grocery shop. A few years later he took over the baker's shop from Edwin BALCON and operated it from 1876 to 1881.
 The Rev A A Munns married him to HARRIET ANN SMITH (b.19, May 1860) on July 30th, 1879. They went to Bordertown where John was employed in a store until he applied, on September 5th, 1891, for Section82 (of 125 acres) of the Hundred of Robertson . This was allocated to him on November 27th, 1891 at Three Shillings and Six pence per acre. There were 56 applicants for the land and the first year'srent was Nine pound Fourteen shillings and Three pence. He opened a Post Office at Bool Lagoo n on July 31st, 1896 (which was first referred to as Bald Hill) The first year's duties were performed gratuitously with the mail contract to Struan on Tuesday and Friday at Thirteen Pounds per annum. He conducted several agencies in the district.
 A school was opened on portion of the land. He bought Block 22 in the Hundred of Naracoorte. It was 96 acres valued at 215 Pounds, payable over a period of Thirty Years in half yearly instalments of Six pounds One shilling and Four pence and improvements valued at 16 Pound, payable for the same term at half yearly instalments of Nine shillings.
 He later bought a property, called "BURFORDS", and also a block of scrub country near the Stewart Ranges.
