He spent his younger days in the Ninlacowie and Streaky Bay areas and in 1891 he went to Warracknabeal, Victoria where he represented John Darling & Co.,wheat merchants, for about 12 months. He then moved and lived on a farm near Gisbourne, Victoria, after which he started a business in Sea Lake, Victoria, and bought a farm near to the town. He lived in the area for some 24 years before acquiring two blocks of land at Daytrap, near Bendigo in Victoria. This land was later occupied by his son, Claude (b.1883).
