a. Note:   beton. The two villages mentioned in this reference, Harberton and Rattery, are villages within a 7km radius of Totnes, Devon and Dean Prior is just to the north of Rattery.
  Both Thomas and Mary Anne signed their names on the marriage certificate whereas the witnesses, William Lowery and Joanna Elliot, just made their 'marks'. It is assumed that Joanna Elliot was a sister but the relationship of William Lowery to Thomas Goss is unknown.
